The next morning comes like a cold shower. Unwanted.
I slip downstairs to meet my mother in the kitchen.
''Hey sweetheart, I'll soon be ready to leave.'' She says as she moves from the stove to the coffee maker, pouring herself a cup.
''No need, Cameron is giving me a ride,'' I say taking one of the plates of eggs.
''Oh right. Am I meeting him soon?'' I hear the disappointment but only answer her question.
''Maybe, I don't know. We are seeing how things go.'' I tell her.
''And what about Ayden? Are things between you two still alright?''
''Of course, nothing's changed.'' The lie rolls easily off my tongue since I'm now used to this question.
''If you say so.'' She responds unconvinced and drops the subject.
Just as I finish my eggs, I hear a knock at the door. I drop my plate in the sink in surprise.
''Must be that Cameron? I'll answer him-''
''No! I mean, we don't have time or I'll be late for school.'' I run to my bag and coat.
''I just want to see him.'' She says as she starts to make her way to the door.
''No mom, not now,'' I say before slipping out the door to come face to face with Cameron.
''Hey there.'' He whispers huskily.
''Come on before my mom decides to open the door,'' I say pushing him away.
''I know where you live now, why not meet your mother as well?'' He asks, smirking.
''Because that's a big never happening.'' I retort. He opens the door for me.
''For m'lady.'' He says in a weird accent and I roll my eyes sitting in the car. He closes the door and makes his way to the other side. When he leaves my eyesight, I see Ayden coming out of his house and see Cameron's car. His expression changes and I wonder if he can see me. If he can see my eyes begging for forgiveness, for his friendship. But no, of course not.
He just shakes his head and gets in his car without another glance.
''Are you ready?'' Cameron asks from beside me.
''Yes.'' I quietly reply and stare out the window.
He starts the car and drives off.
''So what's up between you and Parker?''
''We got in a fight, what's there to say?''
''No I mean, why? Because Jake kissed you?'' He asks, frowning.
''What?'' I laugh. ''It's certainly not because of that, it's why I kissed Jake. He knows it didn't-'' I stop myself remembering my reasons and that I didn't want to tell Cameron.
''Didn't what?'' He demands. I don't answer which makes him sigh, ''So you started the kiss? You have like what? Feelings for that guy?''
''Why does it bother you so much? Sad that I'm not overwhelmed by you like all the other girls?''
''Just wondering.''
We fall in silence for a moment, each of our minds working on different things, different matters of our lives.
''I always thought you and Ayden had something for each other.'' He admits. I open my mouth but close it. He side glances at me, ''Am I right? I mean he looks at you as if you're the only thing that matters in the world.''
