Even in darkness, the light always manages to find a way of shining. Ezra Overland never knew his parents, but he had heard stories of them that had made him want to meet them, just as any child would want to. But he was not any child, and this is what made it harder for him to find a place where he truly belonged. He, however, always thought that his mother would be the one to help him, but it never happened.

He was raised by his grandfather who was an alpha werewolf whose line had been wiped out due to other beings finding them to be too powerful to walk the earth. This bloodline had been started when the moon goddess had made the first werewolf, Kayden, that was meant to rule the werewolf kingdom. Kayden's bloodline was said to be so powerful because it was from this bloodline that all the original seven generations of wolves came from: German, Russian, American, Caribbean, British, Italian, and Alaskan wolves. His bloodline later broke out into these wolves after his son was born and Ezra was a direct descendant from him. The wolves from all generations later rose up and killed the lineage due to them not believing that one should rule them all. This later led to the disbanding of the wolves and the other nations, causing the vampires to see this as an opportunity to overrun the wolves and a war began which managed to wipe out the rest of Ezra's clan leaving only him and his grandfather.

However, Ezra's bloodline was not as pure as other wolves as his mother was a vampire and his grandmother was a witch which made him into an abomination. He was even more tainted as something else ran through his veins, something much darker than a vampire could imagine; he had a blood lust that was manifested into a creature residing within him. The other creatures of the night had agreed that Ezra was not meant to be alive and several attempts were made on his life in an effort to destroy him. So at a young age, his grandfather, Nezriah Overland, informed Ezra of his lineage and why he was without his parents. He also sent him to training to protect him from the many attacks on his life because deep down his grandfather knew he would not always be there to protect him. He did not approve of vampires or witches, but he made sure Ezra had a grasp of how to use his powers while having faith that his inner creatures would explain to him what he was better than he could. He took him to his two closest friends who taught Ezra how to control his powers; his high school sweetheart, Nezrie, who he did not get to marry because of his parent's belief that a wolf must not mix with a witch and his vampire friend, Despero, who every female vampire was crazy about. Ezra found Despero strange but accepted him and viewed him as a father so at his young age he thought the older vampire to be cool, having to do anything he wanted without caring. With their teaching, he learned how to master his powers, but his lessons were not without experience and Ezra experienced only a minuscule of the damage his blood lust could inflict if he did not feed. On one occasion his darkness consumed him to the point where his inhibitions were nonexistent, and he dismembered his girlfriend then feasted on her flesh. His grandfather found him in the forest distraught when his lust had relinquished its hold on him.

His grandfather had no choice but to tell young Ezra the gory details of how his mother's society of vampires attacked and killed everyone when his lineage was being wiped out and how he managed to escape with him.

At age eighteen his grandfather died of a heart attack after Ezra confronted him about a secret. He never stopped blaming himself for his death and not long after Nezrie took him in and continued to train his witch side, Michael, which led his witchcraft skills to develop. It was the secret that she and his grandfather shared, that she was his father's mother that brought him closer to her. Ezra grew up to be six feet five inches with a toned body due to his years of training. He kept his hair short which complimented its velvet black color that often glistened in the sunlight. His eyes were electric blue but would change based on the supernatural creature that were in control while using his powers. He left his grandmother two years after his grandfather died and never looked back.
