Jimin

I sigh looking down at the engagement ring on my left finger.

"You don't like it?" Taehyung asks when I don't say anything.

"No, no. I love it, I'm just-. It's so surreal, y'know?" I respond laughing a little and smiling up at him.

He smiles back but it doesn't quite reach his eyes, not like it used to.

"I love you." I say hugging him so I don't see his expression, that off gaurd expression, that 'should I say it back?' expression.

"I love you too."

I smile even though it feels like a lie, like it was forced from his lips.

He pulls away from the hug smoothing the front of my hair down.

It could be a sweet gesture, loving, but it's not.

It's simply to try to hide his blank expression as he stands. "We have to head home tomorrow, our parents are expecting us."

I nod trying to fight the tears burning my eyes. "I'll just go ahead and pack our things then."

He hums in acknowledgement as he disappears into the suite leaving me on the balcony alone.

I stand wiping my eyes as I look out over the beautiful scenery of Chongwon.

Was this really my life?

Marrying into the family of the love of my life, but feeling so wrong about it?

Everyone said Taehyung and I wouldn't last, high school sweethearts are rare I guess.

Everyone always said we'd get tired of each other and want to explore new things, but I didn't think they were right, I didn't think that they were speaking our fate truthfully.

I keep myself busy for the next few hours with organizing everything and preparing for out departure in the morning.

I don't know where Taehyung's gone off to but I'm used to him leaving by now.

This trip has been planned out for us by our parents and the engagement was public for all the cameras to see.

Taehyung's family were public figures of the most known entertainment center in Korea.

They were responsible for movie making and casting calls and script writing.

Everything that goes into making films or TV shows, they were behind it.

They were signed under over sixty cable channels and five wireless providers.

Their company did the hard work while the Kim's took all the credit, and smiled for the camera.

My family did the hard work for a long time, then I met Taehyung and we fell for each other unknowingly.

As soon as your families found out they started to plan our whole life and future together.

Taehyung and I came out as a couple the same week that a new lgbtq+ tv show premiered under the companies name.

Everyone was head over heals for the show and there were even conspiracies that the show was vaguely based off of our lives.

It wasn't though, but it's good for ratings if they think it is.

Everything was placed just right to make everything sale.

It was fun for a while, everyone gossiping about us, making up cute little stories about us, comparing us to the characters in the show.

But then it stopped being fun.

Taehyung started to get annoyed by the rumors and wanted to put an end to them but couldn't, because they didn't want him to.

My family thinks that marrying Taehyung will bring them up in rank, which it will.

That's why I can't mess anything up, I can't let him fall out of love.

And it scares me to think it's too late.

The door opens and Taehyung walks in. "Jimin, honey."

"Hm?" I hum looking up from where I was packing toiletries.

"There's an emergency back at home." He says looking down at his phone. "I have to run back a day early."

"Oh?" I ask. "We're leaving tonight?"

"No. I'm leaving tonight. I'll leave the car with you but I don't have much time to waste." He says walking away from the bathroom door.

"Oh." I say even though he can't hear me. I follow him into the main room where he's dragging his suitcase to the door. "Are you sure everything's alright?"

He nods looking up at me briefly. "Don't worry about it, be careful driving back."

"Okay." I say watching him open the door and leave without another word or as much as a glance my way. "I love you too."

I drop the toiletry bag and sit on the edge of the bed, staring down at the ring on my left finger.

What happened to us? I think to myself as tears well I my eyes.

I stand grabbing my journal and walking back out to the balcony.

The temperature has dropped and the sun is setting, everything's perfect, almost.

It'd be better if Taehyung was here to wrap his arms around me and protect me from the cool breeze, and to tell me the sunset could never compare to my beauty.

All the things he used to do.

09/06/19 5:30pm.

I got engaged today, in front of a lot of important people. I'm happy, but deep down inside I don't think I am.

Taehyung smiled when I said yes, and kissed me like his life depended on it.

He held my hand the entire event unless his arm was around my waist. It was nice to feel like that again, like we were inseparable.

Everyone congratulated us and we thanked them enthusiastically. We smiled the entire time, we laughed, we performed greatly for the camera. And they bought it, everyone bought it.

But the second we stepped on the elevator it all slowly went away.

First, he stopped talking, then, he stopped smiling, then, he dropped my hand, and it was all gone.

I tried to think back to that time long ago when he was happy with me, that time when all it took was me simply existing next to him to make him smile.

Why can't we be like that again?
