The world is quiet down here. Almost peaceful. I feel like I could be at home in my bed, a warmth on my face spreading down to my neck.

With a startling jolt, I remember where I am.

I stir, sitting up quickly, and instantly regret it. My head is pounding, and my vision is blurry.

The room is a disaster. The door is still flat on the ground, a draw has been knocked out from her cupboard, and to my horror, Ruby is no where to be seen.

"Ruby." I remember, forcing myself off the ground.

I walk past the discarded door, and almost fall over. I feel like I've lost half of my energy, or my lungs and brain aren't functioning properly.

I have to keep going though. I have to get Ruby.

I rush down the stairs, ignoring the jabbing my pains in my head, and the wheezing in my chest.

I stagger into the kitchen, and see Karen looking lifeless on the ground. I run to her, falling to my knees beside her.

"Karen." I say urgently, shaking her slightly.

Nothing.

I grab her wrist, feeling for a pulse. It's light, but it's there.

I grab my phone out, dialling 000 as fast as I can.

"Hello?" I manage to choke out. My voice is hoarse and it hurts to talk right now.

"Hello, this is emergency services, what's your emergency?" I hear a crisp woman on the other end.

"My husband, he took my daughter, he's injured my mother in law, she's unconscious." I speak very fast, and wonder if she's going to have to make me repeat it.

"Do you need an ambulance, ma'am?"

"Yes." I say quickly, looking down at Karen. What the hell did Michael do to her?

I sit on the kitchen floor in numbness beside Karen, waiting for the paramedics and the police to arrive. How the hell did this happen? I don't remember what happened, really. I remember the blackness. And nothing else. I hope Karen knows more, but I know deep down she won't.

It isn't long until the sirens blare through the windows. I hear a knock as I realise I'm the only one that can answer the door.

I get up quickly, and try to ignore the feeling of been winded as I drag myself to the door.

I open the door, and four paramedics and three police officers immediately storm through.

I don't need to say much, they already have noticed Karen lying lifelessly on the ground.

The paramedics are by her side, and it looks like a scene from E.R.

One of the police officers, a woman, turns to me.

"Is there somewhere else we can go to talk?" She asks.

I nod, I don't think I can manage words right now, I feel far too ill.

I wander down the hall and into the dining room, a room barely used by any of us when I was living here.

"Would you like to tell me exactly what happened?" She asks, as soon as I've closed the door.

I try to cast my mind back to today's events. It hurts to think.

"I left Ruby with Michael." I remembered that. It seemed so long ago.

"Then, I went to pick her up this morning, from Karens." I say, scrunching up my face to remember.

"And Karen said they were gone. So we went looking for them. I don't remember exactly how, but we ended up here."
