I spin, and I see a hospital bed been wheeled into the room. A police officer stands on one side, looking down at something I can't see. And then a doctor moves, and I see her.

My daughter, sitting up and giggling at everyone around her, keeping the doctor and police officer transfixed with her delight and happiness. I start wondering if I'm hallucinating.

She looks fine, even happy, as a doctor and police officer amuse her from either side of the bed. But most importantly, she is alive.

"Ruby." I whisper, running over to her.

I don't hesitate to wrap my arms firmly around her, as if my brain needs proof that she is in fact here with me.

I kiss her hard on the forehead.

"I was so worried about you, I missed you so much." I whisper, still holding her too me.

Ruby just grins up at me with her big eyes, holding onto a lolly she no doubt coaxed one of the doctors into giving to her.

She holds the lollipop out for me to see. "Look!" She giggles. And takes a big lick of it.

I smile in relief. She's ok. If she can cheekily lick lollies that she knows I don't let her have in front of me I know she is still my little girl.

I barely realise I'm crying in happiness. She's alive, I repeat to myself. She's ok.

I hear a noise behind me, and I turn to see Mum walking over to me. She looks hurried and urgent, but as soon as she sees Ruby I can tell she is relieved.

Mum rushes over to Ruby, and I move so she can get a better hug. As I watch them, relief starts to etch away and a new emotion starts to knot in my stomach.

"What hell happened?" I demand, turning to the officer and the doctor.

"We're not a hundred percent sure yet. All we know is they were found in a car registered under his name, on the side of the road. It looks like it was in some type of crash." The police officer tells me, stepping away from Ruby. She is a young woman, who doesn't seem firm enough for the police force. Nevertheless, she looks nice enough, and hopefully I can thank her for the reason my daughter is alive.

"Is she ok?" I say, looking to Ruby again, looking for any signs of trauma.

"She appears fine. She was conscious when we found her. Michael was not."

"Was that because of the crash?" I ask, frowning at her.

The police officer looks uncomfortable. "There were drugs found on your husband. Cocaine specifically."

"Cocaine?" I splutter in disbelief.

"There was also a blood alcohol reading of .19," The doctor continues for her.

"That's three times over the limit." The officer finishes for him.

"We pumped his stomach when he got here, but we have to keep him over night, until the drugs are out if his system. He should be ok, but we'll know more then." The doctor explains.

"But after the hospital releases him, we will be taking him straight into custody." The police officer tells me. "We have enough for drug possession and since there was a strong possibility that he could of hurt Ruby, we're also looking at a charge for kidnap."

I sway slightly, drowning in the overload of information. There was a car crash, Michael was taking drugs, and now he was been charged for kidnapping our daughter. It's too much.

I'm awoken from my daze from a moan on the other side of the room.

Michael is stirring, and it takes all I am not to lunge at him and scream at him for answers. Mum grabs my arm firmly, as if she can read my mind, as if she can tell how much I want to gauge his eyes out.
