cold war // cautious clay
After the proposal that I never thought would happen, everyone sat in the living room talking. I would say it was like old times but it wasn't. My parents had never really talked to my friends- except Randy.
It seemed odd, like everyone was finally at peace. But the odd wasn't bad or scary, it was comforting. My mom and dad were on the love seat laughing while Mochi sat in between them. Izzy, Parker, Taylor, and Savannah were on the couch while Austin, Randy, Quinten, and I sat on the floor on the opposite side of our coffee table.
There had already been plenty of wine bottles opened even though I never thought I would see the day that Austin drinks wine. I was happy, though. My heart was full, as it should be if you're this lucky.
"Hey," Randy whispered to me as everyone else talked to each other. "Can we go talk somewhere?"
"Yeah," I nodded. We both stood up and walked outside to the balcony. No one really noticed except Austin who smiled at us as we walked away.
"You've really made it," Randy said, taking a sip of wine straight from the bottle. She looked at the view of the Seattle skyline that I had the privilege of seeing everyday.
"We have really made it," I smiled at her. "I don't know if it could get any better."
"I agree, yeah," She nodded, leaning on the railing of our house. "I just never thought I would."
"Why is that?" I asked her, also leaning on it. She passed me the bottle and I took a sip.
"I swore to myself I'd never fall in love," She shrugged. "Stupid, I know, but I never wanted a husband or a kid. I wanted to see the world, alone."
"You wouldn't be Randy without Taylor and August," I said to her and she smiled a bright smile.
"I wouldn't trade those two for the world," she chuckled and blushed. I could tell she loved them with her whole heart. Randy had changed over the years, but in a way that I was proud of.
"So why did you want to come out here and talk?" I asked her. She turned around and shook her head.
"I know you're gonna ask me to be your Maid of Honor," She told me and I nodded.
"Of course," I told her. "You're my best friend."
"I think you should ask Savannah," She shrugged, looking out at the city.
"Why would I do that?" I asked her.
"Austin is her brother," she let out a long sigh. "I know it would mean the world to her."
"She hardly likes me, though," I shook my head. "A couple of years ago we got in a huge fight because she accused me of using Austin. And I found out she told Austin to make me sigh a prenup if we ever got married."
"What the fuck? Ew," Randy scoffed. "She's on that dumb shit."
"I know she's Austin's sister but I want you to be my Maid of Honor," I grabbed her hand and smiled at her. "You know me the best. Plus, I know Taylor is gonna be the Best Man."
"Yeah," She smiled. "I just thought I'd suggest it."
"I love you," I smiled, pulling her in for a hug.
"I love you, O," she said, squeezing me tightly.

5 hours ago"I am so sleepy," Austin sighed as he laid down in our bed. I finished brushing my teeth in our connecting bathroom and turned the water off.
"Me, too," I said as I pulled the covers back and climbed under them. He pulled me towards him and pecked my lips. "But it's the first time we're going to sleep as an engaged couple."
"You're right," He smiled, kissing all over my face. I blushed as he done so and then grabbed his hand, intertwining his fingers with mine. "I've been mentally married to you for a long ass time, my girl."
"Well, it won't be imaginary soon," I said, pulling away from him and petting Mochi as she laid down in between us.
"I know," He smiled. "And I can't wait."
"Thank you, Austin," I looked at him as his hair sprawled across his pillow. I let my thumb run across his bottom lip as it curled into a smile.
"For what?" He whispered, grabbing my hand.
"Loving me," I kissed his nose and he scrunched it. "Even when you told me you wouldn't."
"You're why," He shook his head. "You're the reason."
"All you needed was to be loved," I shook my head. "Like, really loved."
"And for that, I thank you," he smiled against my lips as he kissed them.
"I can't wait to marry you, Austin Post," I chuckled.
"I can't wait to marry you," He paused. "Olivia Post."
