When I got back to my craft site, to complete my first arrow I stuck 6 feathers into 6 little holes I made in the end of the branch. Now I had 8 branches and a bunch of vines left.
I made one more arrow with the other rock I had and had to improvise with the other arrows. So instead of using rocks for the points, I just whittled the ends to a very sharp point. When I ran out of branches, I had 1 bow, 9 arrows, and still a lot of vines left.
I decided to make another bow for myself. I’d give him the arrows with rocks on them. For a quiver, I used the skin from the cow Toby killed and sewed it together because we luckily remembered to bring the string and needles. I used 5 big leaves to protect the inside of it. I stashed the bows and arrows inside an old, hallow, dead tree, and headed back to the camp.
By the time I got back, it was 6:00pm. On my walk I had plucked the few remaining feathers from the goose.
Toby had a fire started but no food so I began roasting the goose.
Something felt odd. Abnormal even. Whenever Toby started a fire, he never, and I mean NEVER left it unattended but he was nowhere near it. So I went to find Lindsay.
I found her kneeling over something on the floor sobbing. It was “TOBY! Lindsay! What happened?!" I yelled.
"Oh Riley!" she sobbed. So I went over to embrace her. "It was horrendous. Another bomb went off right near Toby and I dragged him in here. I think he's dead! He’s not breathing!!"
As soon as I heard that, I moved away from her and tried as hard as I could not to cry as I leaned over Toby. I held his nose closed, put my lips to his, and blew air into his lungs.
I put my other hand on his chest to feel if his chest was moving up and down. It wasn't yet.
It took a few times of me trying to blow air into his lungs before his chest started moving with my help. Then after about 5 more times, his chest started moving on it's own.
He began coughing so I let go of his nose and retreated a few feet to where Lindsay was sitting. I put my arm around her shoulders and held her tight while she slowed her crying.
Then Toby stopped coughing and propped himself up of his elbows.
Lindsay swooped over to him and wrapped her arms around his neck. He held one of her arms and he looked sort of like he was in a daze. "What happened?" he asked squinting at me.
"You almost died." I replied to him.
"What?"
"You stopped breathing after a bomb went off near you, are you okay?”
Toby took a few deep breaths before standing up, “Yeah, I guess I’m okay.”
I hugged Toby, “It's dinner time. Come on I've go a goose cooked." ‘Can’t wait to eat it…ugh.’
Then both Lindsay and Toby walked outside to the fire and I trailed behind them. Toby stumbled a few times though. I think we were all still in shock a bit.
When we were finished eating, Toby and Lindsay thanked me for making dinner and headed off to bed early. I stayed up for a little while longer before actually going to sleep. There was no way of charging our electronics now and I’m starting to go crazy.
