When I finally tuned back in to the world, it was dark. I was cold. I only zoned back in because I was getting wet. It was raining. It hadn't rained this year yet.
I squeezed through the hole between the two trees and was about to head back when…
"Hey." I whirled to the right and saw Riley leaning casually against a tree.
"What do you want?" I snarled at him.
"I was looking for you so I just followed the crying." he said to me, avoiding my eyes. I wasn't even aware I was crying until I wiped my eyes with the back of my hand. "You're shivering." he commented. He started to take his shirt off.
"What are you doing?" I asked him trying not to look. He wouldn't answer me. Then Riley put his shirt around my upper body. I didn't reject it.
"Let's go back." he replied.
I slept curled up to Toby's lifeless frame that night. Even though he was not alive, when we touched, it touched my heart.
"Riley." I said quietly.
"Ya?" he replied.
"Do you think we'll ever find anymore people?"
"I don't know Lindsay. If we do, I promise I won't lay a finger on them."
I sighed, "Riley, Toby dying wasn't your fault. You were just trying to keep him from attacking me and possibly you. Thanks for...saving me."
Riley smiled when I said that. "No problem." was all he said before we both fell asleep.
