Toby’s POV
"I'll give you my gift first." Riley said to me. "Follow me." Riley rose up and began walking towards the pathway. I followed.
We followed the path until we came to a tall, skinny tree. Then Riley turned right. I trailed a few feet behind him while he began to run. Twisting left and right, jumping over fallen trees and vines, I ran too and it was hard to keep up. I hadn’t been this way so I wasn’t familiar with anything around me.
He stopped when we came to a large, hollowed-out tree. Riley stuck his hand inside and pulled out something. It looked like a bow and a quiver of arrows made from leaves, vines, branches, cowhide, and a couple other materials.
"Wow." was all I managed to say.
He replied with, "Happy birthday little bro."
"Did you make these?" I asked as I took them from him and examined each arrow carefully. With their whittled ends they could for sure kill something.
"Yeah and I have to say, since I had fun doing it..." Then he pulled another bow and sheath of arrows out of the log. "I made myself one too!"
"Thanks a lot bro." I said as I hugged him. "Even though we kind of got off to a rough start to this year, I’ll always love you." I said to Riley.
"Thanks, love you too. Now lets go hunting with our new bows!" he suggested.
After a while of searching, Riley spotted something. It was a big buck. He told me to take the first shot.
I drew my rock-arrow out of my quiver very slowly. Put the end against the vine on the bow. Pulled back. And let go. It landed right in the buck's side. It tried to run so we both shot at it until it fell dead. "Lunch and dinner." said Riley, “Wonderful…”
We don't normally eat breakfast anymore. It's just not part of the day (unless we want meat and berries).
After we hauled the buck back to the base, Lindsay said she had to give me her gift in private. So Riley offered to prepare the buck. I knew he didn’t want to…then again, no one did.
