Her stomach twisted itself into knots of fear as she pulled on her new uniform. It looked just like the first one, but the material felt soft against her skin. It was thin and breathable but felt like it could take a heavy hit. It gave her confidence as she walked out of the hall to meet Loki.
He stood agape as he took her in. The yellow in her uniform complimented her skin perfectly. It hugged her curves in all the right places, and she smiled mildly.
"You're lovely. They are going to adore you." A light blush crept up her cheeks.
"I wish I could say they'll love you too," she trailed off, looking to the ground as he took her arm in his.
They made their way to one of the lower floors where the conference would be in silence. Tony met them just outside.
"So, when I introduce you, you both walk out here alright? Be dramatic. They love drama." He winked before leaving them to listen from behind the door leading to the front of the room.
He made some opening comments on the Triskelion and other recent events before launching straight into the main purpose. It seemed too quickly that he was announcing the names of the new teammates and she was stepping out onto the small stage. Cameras flashed and a hush fell across the room. It was horrifyingly eerie, their thoughts overwhelming. Loki smiled reassuringly at her before Tony was beckoning her to the mic.
The questions came in droves, the word mutant circulating like a virus around the room."You in the back. You have a good question." The room quieted, as she spoke. "Yeah, you."
"I was wondering why we should believe you. Trust you. Why we shouldn't turn you into the authorities to be dealt with. You're a dangerous, mutated disease." Loki tensed on the sidelines at his comment.
"More dangerous than an iron man? More dangerous than a super soldier? I don't see you lining them up to be euthanized Mr. Jones. I am no more dangerous than your protectors. And in case you hadn't noticed, I'm standing up here alongside them. As equals."
She took a deep breath before continuing.
"Humans and mutants have had a rocky past. I'm here today to preserve and protect mankind, and to represent my mutant brothers and sisters in doing so. It's about time we overcome our differences and stand together, mutants and humans alike. I'm willing to push your ugly past aside if you're willing to do the same with mine. Many humans put their lives on the line to protect their countries. I'm doing the same. For our country and our planet. I'm calling you all to mutant-human cooperation, or at least a little respect."
Most seemed appeased, but one accusation rose from the front.
"You're not doing this for us you're just doing this just to be a hero." She laughed.
"I don't want any of that. I don't want fame, or fortune. I don't want people to look up to me. What I do want is to be treated like a living breathing being. I couldn't care less about heroism, I just want to do what's right."
The crowd remained silent and Loki looked on at her with admiration as she walked off to the opposite side of the podium. She completely intrigued him. Of course, he would like nothing more than to be hailed as a hero, but she wanted none of that.
The crowd jeered as he stepped up. Only one comment rose above the rest.
"You're a murderer, we will never trust you." Loki shrugged, glaring at the speaker.
"You don't have to trust me. You just have to trust Asta, and your other precious Avengers. I can assure you they would put me down faster than you'd be able to hear about an incident. Who knows, I might even be of use."
