❝ She couldn't help thinkin' that there

They were both packed and ready to go by the crack of dawn. Tony was cooking eggs in the kitchen and they ate together quietly before he led them down to his personal parking garage. The camper stood out like a sore thumb among the sports cars, and both Tony and Loki smiled to see her face light up at the sight of it. She danced ahead of them, placing her hand on the smooth, mint coloured paint.

"Oh, Tony it must be a seventy-something," Tony shrugged, stuffing his hands in his pockets.

"1973 actually. I thought you might appreciate it. There's cash in the glovebox, and a credit card if you're in a pickle. Or at something high profile. Try to keep in touch, we'd like to touch base at least once a week. Or I would anyways. But some of these guys are going to be off the grid so I'm giving you some freedom." He shot a cool glance at Loki before turning back to Asta. "Please be careful. And take care of each other."

"We will," she assured him, and he turned to leave, prodding Loki in the chest with his index finger. He leaned in, his voice just above a whisper as Asta threw her small bag in the back of the bus.

"Meaning you take care of her." Loki nodded as he stormed off. Raising his hand mindlessly to rest on his chest where Tony had touched him, he wandered closer to the vehicle.

"This is such an odd concept." She poked her head from around the back, looking at him quizzically.

"Yeah, coming from the guy who lives on a planet that still uses horses as their main mode of land transport."

"I happen to like horses," he wandered around back, dropping his bag next to hers with a heavy thud. It was filled to the brim with reading material. She wrinkled her nose, looking up at him.

"Really? They make me sneeze. Also they're terribly messy." He shrugged, and she climbed into the driver's seat, smiling at her passenger.

They fell into a routine very quickly. Asta drove for the first long while, until she finally decided she needed a break. When they hit a quiet stretch of road she leapt out of the vehicle, much to Loki's dismay. She had to drag him from the passenger seat as she taught him how to drive.

"So, the right is to make it go? And the one on the left is to make it stop." She nodded gently before the car lurched forward.

"Woah woah woah Loki hunny there's speed limits." He looked at her, slack-jawed.

"They have limits?" She couldn't help but laugh as he rolled to a stop. He shook his head and started up the road once again, all gas.

If you asked him, he would admit that she was an excellent teacher. On the other hand, he was a rather stubborn student, and it was an exercise in patience for her to talk him through. Despite him never having touched a Midgardian steering wheel before, he was most insistent that he knew everything. She wasn't entirely surprised when he took a corner too fast. He had paled, and looked over at her with such fear in his eyes she would never forget it. He had pulled over on the side of the road after, running his hands over his face.

"I am at the mercy of this machine." She got out and walked around the car, pulling him out of the driver's seat.

"No, you have full control of the vehicle. You are only at your own mercy."

Tony had thankfully stocked the bus with 8-track tapes, and they were anything but short on listening material. The god even grew fond of some of the music. Admittedly, he liked it more with Asta's voice as accompaniment.

It wasn't an exceptionally long time before they reached their first destination and so their hunt began. They were the perfect team, and they were more efficient than Tony could've ever imagined. They watched for a while, as most of their targets visited restaurants or bars. They would approach, and quietly detain.

They travelled comfortably, taking turns sleeping on a mattress in the back or parking at truck stops. The odd hotel was welcome from the heat of the bus.

It was a few weeks into their adventure when they ventured off the grid. They parked in an old lot and gathered the necessities before traipsing off into the scrubby, untouched forest. It wasn't long before they stumbled across a clearing, relatively central to the forest in which they set up camp.

From there, they set out to canvas the area with the expectation of finding at least two men in the approximate area. They had decided to stick together at all times, canvasing areas as soon as it got dark outside. The company was always welcome for the both of them.

They'd been there for a week when Asta's thoughts raced as she laid down, unable to sleep. There was something inexplicably energizing about being out in the wild.
