I lay in the bed trembling. In the corner, I saw ferocious eyes staring at me. It growled and charged at me. I screamed. I felt like I was suffocating. It's dark, greasy fur covered my face. It started to raise its paw.
Travis was right next to me. "Travis!! Why aren't you stopping it?!"
"Sh Liv. It's alright. The monster isn't really there. You're safe."
I started to hyperventilate. "Travis." I whined.
Sweat was stuck to my forehead. He sighed and pulled me into his chest. I started to calm down. My stomach started to hurt at the same time that it was grumbling. I couldn't eat. It wasn't possible in my condition.
Then, the monster was gone. He let go. I felt my temperature rise. The nurse came and put a wet washcloth on my head and started to take the covers off. I was still in my jeans and Camp Halfblood shirt. I curled into a ball and looked at Travis.
He stared out the window. I looked sympathetically at him. This is pathetic. I'M pathetic. He shouldn't be cooped inside because of me. "Travis, go."
"No! It's okay! I want to be with you!"
"I know you don't. You want to go outside. I know you do."
"It's okay! I want to and I can! If Clarisse can do that for her boyfriend, I can do it for my girlfriend."
I raised my eyebrow and gave up. "Ok Travis."
He looked at me. I closed my eyes to rest. I had no rest at all though. I saw a dark place. A shrine was there. Annabeth, Percy, and a Titan were there putting in a message. Then (out of the dream) was a shout.
I opened my eyes. Travis ran out to see what it was. He ran back in after five minutes. "It's a letter, from Annabeth. Now they're taking the message to the Romans. I wonder."
I closed my eyes again. Out of nowhere, I mumbled. "The Athena Parthenos."
"What?"
"Huh? Oh nothing."
"Um ok then."
I saw something out of the corner of my eye. Fiery eyes glared at me. I widened my eyes and looked at it. It started to speak. "So far, you have kept your cool. How long will it last until you finally crack? After that crack, you get just two more torturous dreams. Your pretty boyfriend over there will leave, and you'll be all alone. The fight is your only struggle. Don't forget my promises. Enjoy your dreams."
"No!" I shriek.
I jumped out of bed. I ran to the spot where the monster was. It was gone. I felt the air tighten. I started to choke. Travis ran to me and took me to the bed. "It's ok Liv. It's not there."
"It was different this time Travis! It was her! She said you would leave me and... and... her promises.... fulfilled.... torturous dreams."
"It's ok. I'm here and I'm not leaving. With me, you're safe. I promise."
"Ok Travis. I believe you."
"I'm glad."
He lay down next to me. Sometimes, I could be completely fine. But how long before I actually do crack? I buried my head in his chest. He rested his chin on the top of my head. "I love you." he whispered.
"I love you more."
"Impossible."
"Nothing is impossible."
"The fact that you think you love me more is."
"But I do."
"I love you the most. I have the strongest love for you. It has and always will be inevitable."
"I am speechless."
Travis chuckled. "You should be."
"Why is that?" I said while raising my eyebrow."
"Because, we should be doing more of this."
He kissed me. We would have continued, but Chiron walked in on us. We raised our heads."Oh sorry, I wanted to see how you were doing."
"I am fine, thank you."
"Your welcome."
He walked out the door. Travis and I burst out laughing. "Did you see the look on his face!?"
"Yep! It was priceless."
We laughed for a good five minutes. We lay hand in hand on the bed. "Hey Travis."
"Yeah?"
"Can we go outside to hang out?"
"You can't."
"Pretty please."
"Ugh ok."
"Yay!" I jumped in his arms. He carried me out the door.
I wriggled my toes in the grass. "You're so adorable. You're like a child in a candy store."
"Can we go train? I haven't been there in forever!"
"Sure but be careful."
"You're the best."
He followed me as I skipped to the training area. I grabbed my sword and fought him. I was out of shape. After a few hours of practicing, I regained my old strength. "Technically, you don't need to catch up on archery."
"And why is that?"
"Duh! Your dad is Apollo!"
"Oh yeah!"
"Should we rest?"
"No! Can we go to the lake please?"
"Sure. How can I say no to that face?"
"You can't."
He laughed as we walked hand in hand to the lake. I felt a little dizzy, but I ignored it. We dipped our feet in the water and talked. I started to see lake monsters. I gulped and tried to ignore them. I felt like they were chomping away and my skin. "Travis?"
"Yeah?"
"Do you see them?"
"No, see what?"
"The monsters."
"No. I think it's time to take you back."
Just as he said that, I saw a monster right in my face. I screamed and fell in the deep water. I began to scream and kick. I felt like they were eating me alive, like a buffet, a "hey come eat Liv!" buffet.
Travis jumped in after me. Then, I don't know what came over me. I started to swim away from him. He looked like a demon from Tartarus. "No! Get away!"
"Liv?"
"No!"
"Wait! Why are you running?!"
"Get away from me you demon!"
"Wait... demon? Am I that ugly?" he joked. "Wait, this is no time for jokes. Whatever this 'she' is doing, I'm not a monster. I may look like one, but it's an illusion. Come here."
I stopped thrashing. I looked at him warily and started to inch towards him. His arms were open wide, those scaly arms. "Liv, it's ok. Come here please."
I got into his arms. He smiled (all fangs) and carried me out. We started to walk back. Then, I saw that the whole camp was filled with demons. I started to scream. I dropped to my knees. "Liv, it's ok."
"No! They're monsters!"
"No, it's only a trick. Here let me carry you."
"No! Don't touch me."
The red eyes looked full of hurt. "Please."
"Ok."
He carried me to the hospital. Everything was gruesome and horrifying. Nothing was pretty anymore. Just dirt, pain, and torture.
I laid on the bed, shaking from fright. I closed my eyes to sleep. I ended up having nightmares of all kinds of things. That's when I realized it.
I finally cracked.
