"Sarah! Sarah, open up!" Pidge pounded on her friend's door, kicked it, even, to get her friend to come out. The sleeve of her green shirt slipped down her arm. "It's important!"
The door slid open and Pidge's fist collided with Sarah's cheek. Both girls yelped and jumped away from each other, the latter holding the side of her face with her hands. "What the quiznack, Pidge!" she shouted. "Calm down!"
Pidge didn't even apologize before she hurried, "Keith is back."
Silence. Sarah's hands fell from her face, which was completely blank. "You're joking. Is he? Don't mess with me, Pidge." Her voice wavered, dangerously close to letting her emotions slip and bursting into tears. This had been one of his shorter trips, time wise, but to her soul it felt like an eternity because he hadn't contacted her in two months.
"I'm not. He's really back, he's waiting for you in-"
Sarah pushed passed Pidge and ran as fast as she could down the hall. Pidge shouted Keith's location and took off after her. In that moment, Sarah felt like she could run as far as she had to in order to reach the love of her life. If she had to run the halls of the castle 50 times she would do it if he was waiting at the end.
Waiting for the common room doors to open was agony. She wondered what had changed about him since he left. Had he got a new scar to show her? What if he lost a finger, or worse? Calm down, she told herself over and over again. If anything serious had happened he would have called and told her.
The doors opened and Sarah froze. There was something off about him, but what was it? He was talking to Hunk, sporting a new mark on his face and nodding seriously, but as soon as he heard the door he turned. They made eye contact and Sarah ran into his arms. It didn't matter that he felt different or that she now had to stand on her toes to wrap her arms around his neck, or crane her neck to kiss his lips.
Keith was the one to break the kiss. He put his hand on the back of her head and held her as close as he could.
"I missed you," he whispered. He bent his head to press a kiss to the top of Sarah's head and bury his face into her hair.
"I missed you too. What happened?" Sarah pulled back a little to look at him. "Last I heard, you were going to go find this woman named Krolia."
"I did. And-Sarah's she's-shes my mom." As he told her this tears sprung into his dark eyes.
"You found her," Sarah breathed. "That's amazing! Where is she? What's she like? Will she like me?" She took a step away and looked around the room. She hadn't noticed anyone new when she first came in but maybe it was just her excitement that blinded her to Keith's mother. "Is that why you've been MIA for the last two months?"
Keith stopped smiling. He grabbed Sarah's hand and tugged her gently back to him. "I need to tell you something. It's not... bad."
Sarah wasn't worried before but she was then.
His thumb grazed over her knuckles while he considered what to say to her next. What to say and how to say it were sometimes two different things. "For you it's been two months," he began softly, "or something like that. But we got stuck in a quantum abyss and it's been two years."
Oh. Sarah took a step back to really look at him. She let go of his hand and put one her own up to her chin thoughtfully, then began to walk around him, looking him up and down.
"What are you doing?" Keith questioned, turning with her.
Sarah hushed him and told him to stop moving.
