"She might not wake up. Her head trauma was pretty serious."

Keith glared daggers at the doctor. Of course Sarah would wake up. Why wouldn't she? Sarah was the toughest girl he knew and she'd made it through a lot worse than a hit to the head.

The doctor continued without missing a beat, undisturbed by his glare. "I just think we should prepare for the worst. Does she have any family?"

"They're missing. I'm the only one she's got." Keith's tone was curt. He just wanted to visit Sarah for a few hours, not be interrupted by a doctor who wanted to discuss the possibility of Sarah dying.

Flipping through a few papers on his clipboard, he asked, "And who are you? Are you her husband?"

"No, I..." Keith hesitated in answering. Was it really the doctor's business to know what their relationship status was? He told the doctor as such, and the doctor excused himself. He had better things to do than try to calm down a temperamental boyfriend.

Inside the room the light hurt Sarah's eyes as she opened them. It was too bright. Who had turned her lights on? Her roommate? Surely Kate was kinder than that. When her eyes adjusted, she found that she wasn't in her room. Everything was white and she was cold, and a steady beeping kept going to her left.

"Am I... in the hospital?" she wondered out loud. She tried to push herself up but a splitting pain in the back of her skull kept her down. What in the world had happened? Why was she there? Sarah just laid there for what felt like an hour, wondering what she had done to end up in the hospital. Don't I have a test today? Ugh, I'm going to have to make it up... My head hurts so bad, what did I do? She groaned and rubbed her face, pausing when she felt cool metal on her cheek. Pulling her hands away, she saw a simple ring on her left hand. And where did I get this ring? That definitely wasn't there before.

A knock on the door disrupted Sarah's panicked thoughts. The door opened and Keith Kogane -much older looking and more handsome than Sarah thought he would be after two years of not seeing him - entered, followed by a nurse who slipped in quietly behind him. Why was he in her hospital room? Sure, they'd been good friends when they were younger, but she hadn't seen him in two years! Why was he showing up so suddenly? Did the reason she was in the hospital involve him and she just didn't remember?

Keith didn't say anything as he sat in the chair next to her bed, smiling softly. He moved to take her hand, but when his fingers grazed Sarah's she yanked her hand away from him and held it to her chest. Why was he touching her? He was never that affectionate when they were younger, with Sarah initiating almost all hugs.

Pretending not to notice the hurt in his eyes and the way he hesitantly moved his now clenched hand into his lap, Sarah commented, "Your hair is so long. Have you considered getting a haircut? You've really let yourself go."

"What? Sarah, we just saw each other four days ago. My hair isn't any longer than then."

"No, Keith, it's been like, two years."

Keith's smile fell and he stared at her blankly. "Sarah, you know I love you, but this isn't funny."

Um... okay? Sarah thought that was really weird because to the best of her recollection they hadn't seen each other since they were 15, and here he was, confessing his love to her. And how was she supposed to know he loved her?

The nurse, who had been busy making sure everything was fine with Sarah, came around the bed and whispered something to Keith. He stood up and they went outside, leaving her confused. She didn't see him for a week after that, and a lot of doctors came to visit her that day, asking her all sorts of questions.
