I rolled over and sighed. "Please say yesterday was a dream," I whispered under my voice. I got up and slipped on a pair of dark boots. I walked out of my room and down the hall. The morning sun hit me in the eyes, blinding me for a second.
When I got to my post another guard was standing there. Lucas ran up to me with a worried smile, "I took you off watch." I stared at him wide eyed.
"Why?" the words came out more like a ple than a question.
"I'm giving you a break until you heal," I rolled my eyes.
"You know you could have warned me," I said as Ashford walked past. He gave me a small smile before going in.
"How could I have known he was your cousin," Lucas shrugged.
I really didn't want to talk to him so I just turned and walked away, "Bye." I turned the corner and entered the garden. A small tuft of light brown hair poked it's way out of a bush.
"I have a meeting I need to be at in an hour." He didn't even turn around when he was talk, like he somehow predicted that I would show up. I moaned and rolled my eyes. "You've been asked to stay away though."
A small smile grew on my face, "yes," I whispered in excitement.
"So I have to sit through boring meeting and you have to practice with Lucas fair trade," I shrugged.
"Practice was canceled today," I said as we start walking.
"Does it have to do with anything that happened yesterday," his spoke in a quite, serious tone.
"Maybe," I am still hesitant. I don't want to tell him. He looked at me with an eyebrow raised as if he knew I was yelling. "Well, um yes."
"So what happened?"
Nothing, I wanted to scream it at him, nothing happened. He caught a glimpse of my neck where the top of one of the scares ended. His eyes grew wide as I moved my hand up to hide it. "What did Lucas do," his hand closed into a fist.
"Always jumping to conclusion," I said shaking my head.
He rolled his eyes, "always dancing around the problem," he fired back. He was right I would never tell him the straight honest truth. I wouldn't give him that burden. "Just tell me what happened," he said putting his hand on my shoulders.
"Please get your hands off me, your highness," my voice was cold yet broken. The next time I wouldn't be in that room. The next....
Don't think like that, Kaitlin.
He stared at me wide eyed, "did my dad have something to do with this?" I shook my head slowly. "Was it my fault?" his voice was calm and caring. I closed my eyes and didn't answer. He could tell from the look on my face that it was his doing. He cursed under his breath, "next time tell me." There would be no next time. I will make sure of it.
A small set of footsteps started following us. I turned around and lunged at him, a dagger now at his throat. "Don't scare me like that Ashford," he rolled his eyes as if he didn't want me to talk to him with such a cold tone.
"Well someone started doing her job," Mason said lightening the air. I relaxed and we continued walking. "So, what type of magic do you study, Ash," I had to bite down on my tongue to keep from laughing.
Ashfords eyes met mine. What should I say? I shrugged. Is he trying to get me killed?
"Or do you study more than one," Ashford and I started laughing, as much as I tried I couldn't keep my mouth shut.
"Gods no," he said regaining his manners. He shivered, "just hearing about the night terrors from this one," he chuckles, nudging me, "are enough to keep me away."
"How bad are they?" Mason asked as I rolled my eyes.
"The last time she had a dagger at my throat," Mason gulped as if he was scared of what could happen.
"That was almost 11 years ago, and I haven't had one scenes," I said in reassurance.
"But you still have frequent visions," Mason said throwing me a playful punch.
"Yes but-"
"But those only hurt yourself. And because you haven't gotten any visions those a likely 10 times worse than they should be," Ashford interjected as I rolled my eyes.
"I would much rather die in a vision than kill someone else in a hallucination."
" Don't say that," Mason talked as if would lose part of himself if I left. Ashford could see this to as he grew red in anger.
"Plus Kat-" I looked at him with narrowed eyes, "lin," He corrected himself, "is the only one in history to ever pull something like that off." We walked to the large meeting room and the boys walked in. I walk over to a wall and slowly slide down it.
