Chapter 14: Pursuit

Erica and Zoe's Hotel Room

5th Floor

The Z Victoria Hotel

April 2

1300 hours

"Where is he?" I asked, after Erica didn't say anything after her reveal that she knew where Maddox was.

"Well, that's the thing." she said. "He is at some convenience store."

"Which one?" Cyrus asked eagerly.

"It's called "Palace Convenience Store". Catherine said.

"Ok, let's go." Mike said.

"Hold on." Cyrus said. "This could resort to a car chase. Who here has taken "Tailing the Enemy 101"?

Erica, Catherine, and Cyrus raised their hands.

"Ok." Cyrus said. "Erica will take whoever is closest to her, commandeer a car and chase him, I'll take Murray, Catherine will take the two other kids and Alexander."

"Ok!" Erica said, closing her computer and putting it in the case.

"Everyone ready?" Catherine asked.

We all agreed, Cyrus made sure Murray had the key, and we left. We took two taxis to the convenience store, and Erica was looking at google maps next to me.

The dot that represented Maddox was still in the convenience store.

"Erica, does the "Palace Convenience Store" refer to Buckingham palace?" I asked.

"Yes." she said. "Why? Did you find out something?"

"No, but I have a feeling that it's important."

"No kidding, Sherlock. This convenience store is right next to the English Grill. That can't be a coincidence." she said.

We were silent the rest of the way, except that Erica was humming a tuneless song in anticipation. We finally arrived, and Erica jumped out of the cab, the rest of us following her.

The second we walked in the store, Cyrus grabbed Erica's arm. His taxi had arrived before ours.

"Ok, listen up, gang." he said. "Once you see Maddox, text the group chat. Do your best to make sure he doesn't get away. But if he spots you, run like heck to get to him. Got it?" he asked.

We all nodded, and dispersed to look around the big-ish store. It was medium sized, and was extremely crowded. But little things seemed off in this store. Like the security cameras. There were at least fifty, and one was moving around to watch me. The others weren't doing the same thing.

I was walking around the store, looking at the chachkas. I was nearing near the end of the store, still thinking about the cameras. Was SPYDER in control of the store? Is that why they were following my movement?

But this was all lost in my mind the second I saw him. Maddox saw me the moment I saw him. We were at the back of the store, near a door that was marked "Employees only". It had glass rectangle in a frame next to the door. The door had no handle and no lock. I guessed that you had to scan a hand. Maddox looked like he was about to scan his hand to enter.

Then wondered why a store would need that kind of technology or security. This confirmed my theory: this was just a cover, and SPYDER was actually using this building for something. But what were they using it for? That was the million-dollar question. It was right next to The English Grill, and this was important, I knew it was.

This all happened within a second, and I knew I would never have time to text everyone. So, I used Siri.

I pulled out my phone and said, "Hey, Siri!"

"Yes?" Siri asked in the most annoying voice in the world.

"Text the group chat, 'I see Maddox', ok?"

"Ok." Siri said. "Texting group chat, 'I me box.'"

"Siri, I hate you!" I yelled into my phone, seething at Siri's incapability.

"I'm sorry you feel that way." Siri said in a monotone.

At this point, Maddox took off into the mass of people in the store, trying to get away. As I was following him, I pulled out my phone to manually text the group chat. I was running and texting at the same time, which is why I crashed into Erica. Instead of her falling over because I slammed into her going fifteen miles an hour, I bounced off of her and fell on my butt.

"Ow!" I complained. Then, I hit the 'send' button, and I heard Cyrus yell, "Maddox is getting away!"

Erica grabbed my hand, pulled me up, and we ran outside of the store, just in time to see Maddox hop into a silver BMW sedan, start the car, and zoom away. But while I was watching him, Erica had jumped over the door to a convertible Mercedes roadster. The roof was down, which is why she was able to jump over the door.

The keys were in the glove compartment for some odd reason, and Erica started the car. She unlocked my door, and yelled, "Get in!"

I hopped in the car, and heard Cyrus yell behind us, "Go, go, go!" We'll follow you!"

Erica stepped on the pedal, the car was in reverse of course, and we zoomed out of the parking spot. Erica cut off a car that then swerved into oncoming traffic to avoid us. She threw the car into forward, and we rocketed forward, chasing Maddox's silver BMW. I called Cyrus and put him on speaker.

"Sweetie, where are you? We just commandeered a car."

"We're going away from Buckingham Palace on A3214 Buckingham Palace Road." Erica answered.

"Ok." Cyrus said.

Erica was weaving in and out of cars and driving on BOTH sides of the road. In short, she was giving me a heart attack every three seconds.

"Watch out!" I screamed.

"Keep your pants on. I got it." she said, swerving left onto Elizabeth Street. This was a one-way street, so Erica couldn't kill us by smashing headfirst into a car going the other way. But she COULD keep weaving in and out of cars. We did this for a while, but Maddox was good at evasive driving.

We lost him a couple of times, but since we were on the phone with Cyrus and he had the laptop that was tracking Maddox, we were able to find him again.

Eventually, we got Maddox at the edge of town, and into a dead end. Cyrus and Catherine where nowhere to be found, and Erica said into the phone, "Grandpa, we have him cornered. We are going to approach target now. Bye." Then she hung up.

She and I got out of the car, and Erica drew her gun.
