The end on an alley
Somewhere in London
April 2
1330 hours
As we approached Maddox's car, I could see one clear thing. He was a lot more like Paul Lee than, say, Joshua Hallal. But he wasn't as helpless as Paul. We reached his car, and he had locked the doors.
"Get out." Erica ordered him.
Maddox didn't move, so Erica wrapped a sweater around her fist and punch through the glass. It shattered, the pieces going everywhere. I don't know where the heck she got the sweater, but I didn't ask.
"Get out, Maddox." Erica said again.
This time he did, and without question.
"So, this is the famous Erica Hale." he said, suddenly bright and cheery. "Joshua told me so much about you when he hired me. I was wondering why, but now I can see." he laughed an easy laugh, and the faintest of pinks tinged Erica cheeks.
I was suddenly jealous. I don't know why, but the thought of Erica blushing about Joshua talking about her made me mad. I tried to ignore the feeling, and I was successful.
"Put your hands up." Erica said, her voice ice-cold.
When Maddox hesitated, Erica switched the safety on her gun off. It made a loud, ominous click. Maddox the complied, slowly.
Erica threw he handcuffs to cuff Maddox in. As I was doing this, I finally asked, "Where do you keep getting these?"
"I'm training to be a spy, Ben. It's my job to be resourceful." she said, and I think I heard a smile in her voice. When I looked, however, she was looking at her phone.
"Is this a good time to check Instagram and Snapchat?" I asked innocently. (Thank you @therightstuff1950 for giving me this idea from Spy School Paradise City.)
Her head snapped up, and she looked at me as if I was a bug that she couldn't seem to squash. "Shut up." she said.
"So you DO have an Instagram!" I said, laughing internally. I knew she was texting Cyrus, but I was interested to see what happened.
She turned so red I though she'd explode.
I was shocked. She DID have an Instagram.
Then she immediately regained herself and gave me an icy stare.
"Wow, you're so gullible. Even Zoe wouldn't have fallen for that!" she said, suddenly giggling.
All I could do was stare at her incredulously.
"Awe, you're so very cute," Maddox said impatiently. "But I think you didn't capture me for no reason. So what do you want?" he quipped.
It was strange. He kept going from frightened to impatient to mad in seconds. I dismissed it because something suddenly caught my attention. It was a shiny thing of Maddox's finger. His ring finger.
I walked back over to Erica and whispered:
"Look at his ring finger."
"I know." she said back. "It was the second thing I noticed."
"Oh." I said, wondering what the first thing was.
Already it seemed as if Erica had worried she'd said too much.
