Sam:
I eventually caught up to her at the salon in the back room and walked straight in without knocking.
"Eliza..."
"Not now Sam. Please."
"But we have to talk about this. What happened?"
"Look, Sam, it's not what you said, it's just when you said it. I left to get some clarity and be away from all this close touchy-feely stuff. It may be easy for you, but I don't work like that. I can't just open up to someone or say something like that out of the blue. I care about you. I really do. But love is such a strong emotion and I don't even know what it feels like. I know I like being with you and care about you, but I can't say what you want me to say."
"Why not?"
"Because I'm scared."
"Of what?"
"Falling in love."
"Never fear love, Eliza. It's the only thing that keeps us from slipping into the darkness."
"You know how I am Sam. I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you."
"You don't have to Eliza. I get it. It's hard to love someone or even get close to them when every time you do, you get hurt."
"What do you know about bad relationships?"
"You're not the only one who's had bad relationships. I may not have been in any seriously dangerous situations, but I have had my fair share of heartbreaks and unfaithful lovers."
"Wouldn't have expected that from someone who walked into a hair salon a year ago and got the girl who worked there to go out with them."
"Guess there's a lot more to me than meets the eye."
"I guess there is."
"So tell me, Eliza, what's stopping you from saying you love me right here right now."
"I can't tell you I love you because I don't love me, and I can't love someone else and hate me at the same time."
"Then I guess we'll have to change that."
"I guess we will."
