Cora's Point of View
The only thing interesting that happened in PreCalculus was that we had a pop quiz. Nothing else, though. I walked with Frisk back to the library. From there, Goth showed me the way to the history room. We were the first ones in the classroom and Goth introduced me to the teacher.
"Nightmare, this is your new student. Her name is Cora Hadley and she's mute. She used sign language to communicate." Mr. Nightmare looked me up and down and I did the same to him. He was a skeleton and wore a black vest over a purple dress shirt, black dress pants and shoes and a purple beret that faded to black. The beret had a golden crescent moon pinned to it.
"That dress looks like something Raven would wear. Are you related to her by chance?" I nodded in response to his question. "How so?"
I was unsure of if Mr. Nightmare could understand sign language so I went up to the chalkboard and wrote my answer. It read, 'I'm her niece.'
Nightmare raised his brow bone. "You're Dove's daughter?"
I nodded and wrote on the board again. 'You knew my mother?'
"We were...very close. She was my best friend throughout our high school years. How...how is she?" I felt tears form in my eyes and I drew my finger across my neck. The universal sign for dead.
"Oh... I-I'm sorry for your loss. How...how did it happen?" His tone turned even sadder. I felt myself shaking as I took the chalk in my hand again. I wrote in large letters, 'SHE WAS MURDERED!'
I erased the words as soon as I was sure that Nightmare read them. The chalk snapped in my hands and I gripped my necklace, searching for some sort of comfort from the necklace that used to belong to my mother. I felt boney arms wrap around me and pull me into a hug.
"Apologies are not what you need right now. I realize that." Nightmare cupped my cheeks and wiped away the tears that spilled from my eyes. "You are a strong girl. I can tell that you have your mother's kind heart." I felt myself smile a little. Nightmare smiled back at me. "You should get to your seat now."
As soon as he said this, he released me from the hug and the bell rang. Students flooded into the room and they all took their seats. Nightmare erased my side of our conversation off of the chalkboard and wrote today's assignment. "Today, I am assigning you a project. Keep in mind that projects are 60% of your overall grade." Nightmare took off his beret and placed slips of paper in it. "Student's will draw a slip from the hat. On that slip of paper, there will be a number and a subject. You are to find the student with the matching number and subject and you will be paired."
"What will the project be?" One of the students asked, taking a slip of paper out of the cap.
"As partners, you will write a five-page essay on the subject given to you and you will create a drawing of what your subject is. This drawing can be traditionally done on paper or can be digitally done. I will write the application you must use to create the digital art as soon as everyone is assigned a subject." I was the last one to receive a slip of paper. "See me after class, Cora. I would like to talk to you." Nightmare whispered to me and I nodded to him.
"You may find your partners now. Good luck with your projects." Nightmare turned around and started writing on the board again. "Oh and I forgot to mention something. Students will be graded based on the amount of work they do on the project. Meaning, if your partner scores high that does not guarantee you a high grade." Jocks groaned and nerds cheered. I giggled at the mixed reactions. I felt a tap on my shoulder.
"Do you have the number five on your slip?" I turned to see a strange looking skeleton. The bone around his left eye was dark, the rest of his face was the standard white bone and his eyes were a mesmerizing bright blue color behind his thin, round glasses. He seemed to be different from the skeletons I've met so far. He wore a green and white cap, an olive green shirt underneath a collared black jacket, a pair of blue jeans and untied light grey sneakers.
