Max's little experiment worked the way she wanted it too. The homework smudged and it even turned the desk purple. Mr. Clarke was forgiving and handed her another one and told her to
"Becareful next time" and "Follow when we go over the homework"
When school ended, I practically jumped out of my chair and rain to my locker. Max did the same, giving Dustin and Lucas a rain check and we quickly walked in the rain off to where ever she planned to bring me. I knew I was going to worry Jonathan but they were always worried now ever since the whole upside-down incident. I just wanted to be free for once.
We walked pretty far till we ended up at an old shed that didn't seem too out of shape. We entered with a trail of our dripping hair, clothed and whatever else.
"Eh?! Pretty cool right?" Max said. It was nice. It was nicely set up with blankets , little curtains on the two windows on the side and even pillows.
"Jeez Max..How'd you even find this?" I said, looking around and dropping my bag by the door.
"Well I just made a deal with the guy who actually owns this place. I clean up his driveway or backyard." She smiled.
"This place is really nice" I looked at her, a smile still on my lips but soon faded when I saw the worry on her face.
"What happened at school? Why did you...??" I looked down.
"Oh..That. It's Mike. I don't think we're even friends anymore. I try to keep myself in his life but it just seems that-.."
"Eleven is more important than you?" Max continues for me. I nod and sit on the bean bag, knowing well enough that it's going to be soaked just as wet as I was. Max didn't seem to care and sat down by the window.
"Yeah. I want to be there for him, want to be his bestfriend again. I mean don't I get the right to be angry? I was gone then taken over by the mindflayer and all he cares about is eleven?! I get it, she saved me and I'm so thankful for that but-but I was there first! His very first friend and it just seems like it never happened like I don't matter"
"Will you matter so much to Mike, to all of us! Listen, Mike is just going through this whole love phase but It'll pass-"
"But what if it doesn't,Max?! Maybe he doesn't even want to be friends anymore" I put my face in my hands. Max stood up.
"Have you talked to him?"
"How could I? He's always on about El" I mumbled.
"Then I'll make him listen. Come on. Let's go visit Mike" Max grabbed our bags and headed out into the rain again. It was way worse now and I regretted walking all this way.
"Max.."
"It's just rain. I'm not gonna let anything happen to you" Max smiled. We put on our bags and she held my wrist as we walked all the way to Mike's street.
