Allie couldn't quite figure out what it was, but she knew something was wrong. The past two days Chris had been acting a bit unusual but she realized just how odd his behavior was once they were on their date that weekend. Chris was a quiet man but this was different. He seemed withdrawn and nervous, constantly rubbing the back of his neck or giving her a look that she couldn't distinguish.
Allie decided not to say anything during their date but once the evening had come to a close, it was obvious something was wrong. Chris walked Allie to her door and leaned in, pressing a soft kiss to her cheek before heading to leave and said, "I'll see you on Monday."
His briskness and obvious disinterest hurt Allie and she felt soft tears prick her eyes. After each date he had given her a long kiss, or a few long kisses, before he told her either what a great time he had and that he wanted to go out with her again but it was obvious that this time was different.
"So is this over then," Allie's soft voice spoke, motioning between them.
Chris halted at the top of the stairs. She saw a long sigh come out of him before his shoulders drooped and he slowly turned around and asked, "What are you meaning?"
"You've been acting weird all night," She informed him. "Look Chris, if you don't want to go out with me anymore, that's okay but at least have the decency to tell a girl, not just give her the brush off so rudely."
His soft blue eyes had been staring down at the floor but he finally looked up and that's when he saw the tears in Allie's eyes. Instantly he melted and Chris hurried over to Allie, hugging her tightly against his toned chest and cradled her, wanting to take away every tear in her eye.
"No, no Allie that's not it at all. I'm so sorry," He apologized profusely before she hugged him back. "I just was afraid you weren't going to want to go out with me again after this and I was upset about it."
Allie pulled away from him enough so she could look up at his kind face and asked, "Where would you get an idea like I wouldn't want to go out with you again?"
At this, Chris froze. He dropped his muscular arms from around her and tried to think at what he should do. He didn't want to tell Allie the mean things that he knew the men had said about her, but even worse, he didn't want her to know that he couldn't help but wonder if they were true.
He blushed red from his embarrassment while Allie rested her small hand on his arm and looked up at him with her doe eyes and said, "Chris, please tell me. I want to understand."
A long sigh came out of Chris before he rubbed the back of his neck and stared at the ground, "So uh.... You know when Jason um, walked into my office and saw us together? Well um... in the elevator he uh, said some things."
Just hearing Jason's name made Allie's walls go up and she put her hands on her hips before asking, "What kind of things?"
Chris didn't want to tell but he lifted his eyes from the ground and honestly told Allie, "He said that you go out with guys for three dates and then they never hear from you again and I guess... I was just afraid that was going to be me too."
Instantly Allie huffed while she paced back and forth in front of her apartment door muttering, "Jason is such an idiot. My mistake was to ever go out with him in the first place!"
Chris watched as she kept pacing and mumbling incoherent things. Allie's dirty blonde curls swung and bounced as she huffed before she eventually stomped over to her door and angrily shoved her keys in, unlocking it and then stomped inside. At first Chris was unsure what to do, but when he saw her plop down on her couch with a huff, he decided to follow her inside.
He closed the door behind him before he tentatively walked over and sat his muscular tall frame on the small couch. Allie had her head in her hands but when she felt his weight sink down on the cushion, she lifted her head and that's when he saw her teary eyes.
"I'm really sorry Allie, I shouldn't have repeated what he said. I never would have if I would have known how much it hurts you," Chris felt his heart breaking from seeing her glossy eyes.
A long sigh came out of her before she admitted, "It's not your fault Chris. I think it just upsets me because... I know it's true."
The quiet man had no clue how to respond so he just listened as Allie turned to face him and explained, "My parents got divorced when I was little and I never had much of a relationship with my dad after that because he never showed up when he said he would and then he stopped showing up at all and it left me feeling really... rejected. Then as a teenager, my mom started dating a lot and I saw a lot of these guys date her for a while and then leave. I guess it kind of made me skeptical when it came to relationships and love and so I'd go out with guys and have fun but then I knew they'd get bored and eventually leave so I figured I'd leave first."
"When do you feel like that changed?" Chris wondered, surprised to find this all about the joyful and loving woman.
Her warm eyes slowly looked up, meeting his bright blue ones as she softly replied, "When I met you."
His eyes grew wide as he pointed to himself and asked, "M-me?"
"Yeah," Allie tucked some of her spiral curls behind her ear while she smiled warmly. "I met you and suddenly everything was different. I didn't feel all the fear I did before. I used to always feel like it wasn't worth the risk but then I met you and I realized that it was worth the risk. I don't want that to be my pattern Chris, I want to be with you."
"I want to be with you too, Allie," Chris reached over to rest his big warm hand on top of her small one. "And I want you to be able to trust me."
"I already do," She told him. "And I want you to know that I don't have any plans of bailing on this relationship. I'm crazy about you and I want to be with only you."
A cute smile appeared on Chris' clean shaven face before he brought a hand up to cup her cheek. His thumb gently stroked her cheek while he gazed into her eyes for a long moment before he leaned in to bring their lips together.
This kiss wasn't as guarded as the other times he kissed her. He had wanted to respect boundaries and not come on too forward but this time Chris couldn't help himself and he kissed her deeply. Allie wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him closer while she melted into the kiss.
Eventually Chris pulled away as they panted to catch their breath. He held her tightly in his arms and kept his face close to hers, his lips brushing against hers softly as he spoke, "So does that mean you'll be my girlfriend?"
Allie's eyes crinkled up in a wide smile before she told him, "Kiss me again and find out."
As Chris laughed at her response, he knew in that moment that he was such a goner.
