Chris felt like his body was going to break out in a cold sweat at any moment. He could feel his heart pounding inside his chest and his palms were sweaty against the steering wheel. He turned his head to look at Allie as he turned down a dirt road and she stopped the lengthy story she had been telling to ask, "Wait... where are we going? I thought we were going to see a movie?"
"I kind of, um," Chris trailed off nervously as he gulped. "Well I found this nice spot and thought we could just hang out. Is uh, that okay?"
The exuberant woman leaned over the center console and pressed a sweet kiss to his soft cheek, telling him that, "Anything is okay with me as long as I'm with you."
Even though all his nerves were swelling inside him, he couldn't help but beam from her doting words. Chris pulled the car to a stop when they reached the end of the dirt road and he grabbed his backpack and put it on after he climbed out of the car. Allie came to his side and he took her hand in his big warm one and led them on a short walk as Allie's happy chatter filled his ears.
"Ugh, sorry, I'm rambling," She apologized while her short legs stepped over a log.
Chris looked down at her, smiling as nudged her, "Don't stop. You know how much I love hearing your voice."
Allie stood on her toes so she could kiss his cheek, telling him, "I love you."
His blue eyes flickered down to hers as he smiled, "I love you too. Now c'mon, I have a surprise."
She instantly started begging him to tell her what it was, but Chris just kept walking, leading her down to where it was. Allie asked him over and over what is was but gasped when she saw the cutest little white rowboat tied up to a dock on a little lake and buzzed, "Are we going on the boat?"
Chris just nodded, grinning from ear to ear when he saw her excitement as she bounced up and down. He swore there was no more rewarding feeling in the world than making Allie happy and his heart felt warm as he led her to the boat. Chris got in first, spreading his legs apart to balance his weight before holding his hands out so he could help her into the boat.
Once they were settled, Chris took his backpack off and put it behind him, then grabbed the oars and began rowing them out onto the lake. Allie's eyes were full of wonder as she asked him, "How did you even know this was here?"
"My mom used to bring us down here when we were kids. It's always kind of been my secret spot," His blue eyes looked around.
"But now I know your secret," She laughed, her happy eyes crinkling up as she looked at him.
"Well now it's our secret spot," Chris simply replied.
Allie just wanted to melt into a puddle and she shook her head at him, resting her hands in her lap as she said, "I don't understand how you can do that. How you can say those sweet things and make my heart feel like it's going to explode."
At first Chris didn't say anything in response. He put the oars in the holders before he spread a blanket on the bottom of the boat between the two seats on either end. Chris carefully moved to sit in the middle before opening his arms up for Allie. She sat between his legs, resting her back up against his chest and laid her head on his shoulder while his thick arms came around her.
Chris pressed a kiss to her forehead while she looked around at the view, seeing the sun shining through the trees that surrounded the lake and caused the water to sparkle. It was beginning to be evening time and the sun was falling as they sat there and Allie told him, "This is like a Disney movie. Right now, everything is perfect."
"I couldn't agree more," Chris held her a little tighter.
With everything that had happened recently of so many old feelings being brought up, it only made Allie realize even more that Chris was her person. He was the one she adored and moments like this just made her want to cry from how much she knew she'd treasure them in her heart always.
"I was kind of thinking this morning and I realized that I think my childhood is partly why I love Disney so much," Allie confided in Chris.
"How so?" He wondered.
"Well," She turned her head to look up at him, "When I'd watch Disney movies, everything was just... wonderful. Some of the characters had sadness or pain but they went on to have these dreams and adventures and wonderful lives. It made me like like maybe that could me one day."
Chris understood where she was coming from and acknowledged, "It's fun to imagine that as a kid, isn't it?"
"That's the thing though," Allie sat up so she could rest both hands on either side of Chris' smooth face, looking right at him as she said, "I grew up to have a fairytale, because I grew up and I have you. You're my new dream."
"And you're mine," His voice was tender before Allie leaned in to kiss him but he stopped her and said, "Wait, hold on. I want to give you something first."
Allie wrinkled her eyebrows up in confusion, wondering what it was. He grabbed his backpack and rummaged around in it for a long moment while he said, "Close your eyes."
She playfully huffed, causing Chris to laugh as he kept looking for what he wanted. When he finally pulled it out, he opened up the box and told Allie, "Okay, you can open your eyes now."
When her long eyelashes fluttered open, her hands slapped across her mouth as she saw Chris holding the most beautiful sparkling diamond ring she had ever seen in her life. For the first time in her life, Allie was speechless, giving Chris time to say what was on his heart.
"Allie, I know I'm not the best with words and I tried to think of the perfect speech to say to you but I couldn't figure out what I was supposed to say," He nervously took a deep breath while his eyes arched as he looked at her and simply said, "I just love you Allie, I love you more than I even knew you could love a person and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. So will you marry me?"
By the end of his words, Allie had a river of tears falling down her face before she threw her arms around Chris' neck, hugging him tight as she sobbed, telling him over and over again, "Yes yes yes yes! Of course I will! I love you Chris, I love you so much."
Tears began flowing from Chris' eyes as he held onto her and breathed a sigh of relief. The two stayed in each others arms, hugging, crying and kissing furiously, their hearts overcome with emotion. Once they had settled down a little bit, they both wiped at their eyes and Chris took her left hand, asking her, "Can I put this on you?"
"Yes!" Allie squealed, excitedly fidgeting as he slipped the ring onto her finger and then placed a soft kiss on her knuckles. "Oh my god, I get to be your wife!"
Chris laughed as she kept on squealing and then lunged at him again, desperately needing to kiss all over his handsome face but her movements caused the boat to wobble. Instinctively Chris reached out to grab the sides, attempting to steady it but it was too late and it tipped over, dumping them both into the lake.
"Allie! Are you okay!" Chris surfaced from the water and called out.
She popped up right after him, pushing her drenched hair away from her face. Allie had a startled look on her face, her brain processing what had happened but once the realization hit her as she waded in the water, she looked at Chris and the pair just burst into hysterical laughter.
They grabbed onto the boat to keep them above the water as they kept on giggling and slowly swam to shore. Chris drug the boat up before plopping down on the bank and Allie trudged out of the water, dripping all the way.
Chris looked up at her, smiling as he saw her beaming while she looked down at her hand, seeing the ring sitting there. Her twinkling eyes then set back on him and she ran over, tackling him onto his back and pressed kisses all over his face which made him burst with laughter.
"I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you!" Allie repeated over and over again between her affectionate assault on his face.
Chris wrapped his arms around her waist, rolling her wet body off of him and put her next to him on the ground. He then rolled on his side so he could look at her, reaching over to push away her soaked curls so he could see her face.
"I couldn't be any happier than I am right now," Allie was glowing.
"Well, I'm going to try to prove you wrong and make you even happier than you are right now," Chris smiled. "And I have a lifetime to do it."
