Twinkle, twinkle little star...
The girl didn't like the stars. It was nothing personal, just she felt like they had no real purpose; not like the sun which gave light during the day, or the moon which glowed with the reminder that the sun would be around in the morning. Stars lingered at night giving off little light.
'Worthless,' the girl thought one night where she was particularly annoyed with them. That was the night she decided she would at last do something about their infuriating presence. 'I will take the stars from the sky and do everyone a favor by getting rid of them once and for all,' she thought with satisfaction. With an ease that had the girl questioning why she waited so long to do it, she reached up and grabbed a handful of the stars then stuffed them in her pocket. She did this with another handful then had to stop when her pockets couldn't fit anymore. The girl huffed at herself for not being more prepared. She took one last look up at the gaping holes in the litter of stars and promised to come back tomorrow night with something bigger to carry the rest.
How I wonder what you are...
In bed that night the girl sat up staring down at her newly acquired collection of useless lights. But right then they weren't all that useless at lighting her room, and she hoped no one else was up to see the brightness shining through the bottom of her door. She was sure if her parents found out she stole the stars from the sky she would get in trouble. There's nothing in the law about not taking them, but no one had done it yet so there must've been some unspoken one that she hadn't heard anything about. The girl shrugged away her concern and brought her attention back to what really mattered: figuring out what exactly the point of stars was. She tried to piece together the facts of stars in her mind to form some kind of whole.
'They're shiny individually, but are really dazzling bundled together; they give off white light; they are...pretty up close,' she admits to herself reluctantly. The longer she had them around the more the girl begun to appreciate the stars a little more – that didn't mean she thought of them as any less worthless, just that they were nice to look at. There weren't many things that fit the description that the girl could think of, but there was one that began to make sense the longer she thought about it.
'Diamonds, stars are diamonds,' she thought with mind-boggling awe. With that revelation fresh in her mind, the girl couldn't wait for the next night to get more. She could be rich! She couldn't let someone else learn how easy it was to get all the diamonds they could dream of.
Up above the world so high...
Trudging into the backyard of her home with a wheelbarrow that was used for a number of things on the farm she lived on, the girl found a spot to place the wheelbarrow down and began to snatch star after star from the sky as if she was racing someone. Soon every corner of the sky was exposed without a single star giving it any cover, and the girl nodded with happiness at how full the barrow was. She grabbed the handles of the wheelbarrow and turned it around to stash it in the garage where she'd then gather the stars in a big black plastic bag and hide them away in her playhouse. She just hoped that would be enough to dim them down and keep anyone from becoming curious. The girl was so mesmerized by the glowing orbs she stole, that it wasn't until she looked up to start her journey back to her house that how dark it was became apparent.
She glanced up at the now pitch black sky and back down with a frown. 'Maybe they did brighten things up a little,' she knew that that was an understatement. Good thing the barrow of stars were more than enough to show her the way, and she proceeded with her plan.
Like a diamond in the sky...
“I can't take this,” the man began with a frown as soon as he was done examining what he didn't know was a star. “It's very pretty, young lady, but it's no jewel I've ever seen and that could only mean it has no value. I can't give money for something that's not worth even a dime in currency sense.”
The girl wasn't really surprised, just slightly disappointed and even more smug feeling that she was right about how worthless and pointless stars truly were.
Not saying anything else, she grabbed the offered star and went to go find her older brother whom said he was going to be at the tool shop across the street.
Once again up in her bed at night instead of sleeping, the girl contemplated what to do with all the stars she stole. It would make sense to just put them back, especially since she was being kind of hypocritical keeping them hidden in her playhouse when she had been talking so much about how annoyingly present they were. 'Why keep them when they irritate me so much?' she asked herself with bewilderment. When she thought they had some type of worth that was the perfect excuse to keep them, but now that that was out of the equation it was time to get rid of them once and for all like she originally planned. Though what could she do with them outside of putting them back where they belonged? 'If I put them back there'll be there to torment me with their uselessness,' she thought. 'But are they really useless? They do brighten the night up significantly.' Even though it goes against everything she had grown to believe, the girl was okay with deciding they weren't as completely unnecessary as she thought, because it gave her a reason to put them back without going over it anymore.
She dreamt that night of a world that was forever dark, because she took away the only source of light.
Twinkle, twinkle little star.
She got all the stars she took and carried them in the wheelbarrow outside to the backyard where all of this started. Not just because that was where she stole the stars, but because that was also where she came to the understanding that all stars have no real reason to exist. She was out here with her dad, and he was (unsuccessfully) trying to show her the constellations. He had told her that the big dipper was one of the easiest one to find, but when he pointed and she tried to see what he saw it all looked like a big pile of distant glittering lights to her. She got no entertainment out of trying to string together dots that had no numbers to tell her which dot connected to the other first. She ultimately lost all interest in the stars, and that eventually morphed into a vague dislike that was what it was today.
Feeling the need to get the whole thing over with, the girl sat the wheelbarrow down and picked up her first handful of stars. She took a brief moment to look at them fist in her hand, then threw them up into the sky where they belonged. They made streaks of shimmering light as they flew up to fill the blackness above. The girl tried not to let how pretty it was distract her from what she was there for, and continued to throw as many stars as her hands could fit into the air; giving them the boost they needed to make it back home.
The barrow was empty in a matter of minutes. Now that her mission was complete, the girl couldn't resist looking up one last time before going back inside. She gasped. The sky was obviously lighter, but that wasn't what had the girl exclaiming in shock.
It was the Big Dipper; she could see it along with the other constellations her dad told her about. The girl felt wonderment and suddenly rejoiced at knowing she was named after something so beautiful; she was proud to say her name was Cassiopeia.
A.N.-I'm not usually one to write short stories, but I was inspired; I use to sing Twinkle, Twinkle little star to my baby sister to put her to sleep (yes this is the same little sister that can hoola-hoop while I can't), and I guess it just had to be done. I hope you enjoyed this little piece of fiction that I offered you and that you'll come back for more.
Also, play the video over to the right of your screen it's very soothing.
