The question that I hate being asked is, “What kind of music do you like?” while I know it is a conversation starter and it has become such a natural question that comes out of our mouth when we’re getting to know someone. My answer to this question is whatever makes me sing or dance. That’s why I listen to music.

Here’s a list of my top 5 songs:

-Rude by MAGIC!

-Let Me Be Your Wings from Disney’s Thumbelina

-Latch by Disclosure

-Cruise by Florida Georgia Line

-Phantom of the Opera from Phantom of the Opera

Lets start with Rude. It is a reggae infused song about a guy who wants to marry a girl, but the girl’s dad doesn’t like the guy and since the dad is old fashioned when the guy asks for permission to marry her the dad says no.

While this might sound like a sad song MAGIC! kept it upbeat and it’s such a fun song to crank up loud in your car and sing along.

Another reason why I love this song so much is because it resonates with me. That is the mark of a good song, when it resonates with your audience. My dad is super old fashion and is a strong Christian believer. My dad likes most things about my boyfriend except for that fact that my boyfriend doesn’t go to church, which is a deal breaker for him. I am older than the rest of my fellow writers and I’ve been dating my boyfriend for three years now so of course the topic of marriage has come up. So the possibility of my dad saying “no” if my boyfriend asks him to marry me, is a strong reality. Also, my boyfriend and I each decided that we’d get married regardless of my dad’s answer because that’s how strong our feelings are. Like I said previously, this is not a sad or super mushy sounding song. It has a fun upbeat tune, I could listen to this song on repeat for days and not get sick of it! I’m obsessed.

I just now looked at my list of songs, like really looked at them and they all have a romantic component to them. *Sigh* the struggles of being female.

Next song!!! Thumbelina is one of my favorite Disney movies and I don’t think it gets enough attention that it deserves. Maybe I like it because she’s super small and I’m short? Or, it is because she is quirky and I get called weird all the time? I don’t know, but all I know is that I always loved watching this so much as a kid (I bought it on dvd this past black Friday). In my humble opinion Let Me Be Your Wings is, and should be, one of the best romantic Disney songs. Instead you got Part of Your World, A Whole New World, Beauty and the Beast etc. Disney movies are decided good or bad almost entirely based on the songs (if there are any) in the movie. If the songs aren’t good then people don’t care about the movie as much.

Music dictates us as humans so much. That’s why music in movies is so vital in every culture. It can encourage you to feel suspense in a scary movie or western, it can have you feel sad in a romantic comedy or a sad romance (has anyone seen If I stay or Fault in our Stars yet??). Music is a powerful thing and I think it’s somewhat under-appreciated because we can download it so easily can access it anywhere. No one ever asks, “Do you like music?” because we all know that everyone likes it. And I don’t think we should restrict ourselves to certain genres. Here comes a weird analogy, genres are like different races of music. It always irks me when I hear someone ask, “What’s your favorite type of music,” then the response is typically, “Anything except country music.” I personally think people who say that haven’t given country music a fair chance and hasn’t to a lot of other genres.

Cruise by Florida Georgia Line is one that has crossed the Country music line and entered into the mainstream line. You can listen to it on your radio after you just listened to Nicki Minaj’s Anaconda, Imagine Dragons’ Radioactive, Avicii’s Wake Me Up. I don’t know if you’ve looked at my profile page but it’s of me wearing my cowboy boots. I am a country girl, and no I don’t live in Texas. I am part of an Ag community, there are farms, orchards and vineyards everywhere, in the part of California where I live. Originally I used to be naïve and say, “Anything except country” until I realized I’ve never really REALLY listened to country music. I just would say it because that was everyone else’s response. When people say, “Anything except country” I ask them, “Why don’t you like country” and the response is somewhere along the lines of “all they sing about are trucks” “I listened to country once and I just didn’t like it” “all they sing about it beer”. I could name probably several songs that they and you listen to that mention alcohol and someone’s car. And when people say that they listened to it one generally means that they listened to A song and didn’t like it. There is more than one country song. I myself don’t like old country music; I like modern country music because it’s more upbeat and fun. I don’t particularly like heavy metal but I listen to it when I’m frustrated and it helps me get my feelings out. I challenge you to give the genre you say you don’t like or a genre that you’ve never listened to another chance.

Lastly Opera…Opera/Musicals. Love! I’ve been to some Operas as well as Musicals on Broadway. It is such a fantastic experience. It gives you a small window into what people around the world used to do for fun since they didn’t have a movie theater, arcade, or Chuck-E-Cheese. You get dressed up and you see artist perform a story, or movie live in front of you. It is amazing and I highly recommend it, even if you don’t like Operas or Musicals. Everyone closes off life experiences just because they don’t like something. If you want to say you lived a well-rounded life with no regrets then you need to see an Opera or Musical at least once. If you want to see a funny musical, go see Book of Mormon. It is hilarious, I’ve watched a few clips on YouTube and now I want to see it more than ever. It was created by the same people who produced South Park on tv. If you want any more suggestions message me, there are so many out there! Like I said, you need to experience it at least once.

You can’t say you’re a music lover, obsessed with music or major in music in college unless you can find some appreciation for all music types. And you can’t say, “I appreciate all of them but I don’t have to like all of them”, well you can’t love music if you dislike some of it. Just like you can’t say you like Mexican food if all you eat is Taco Bell. You have to taste and grow to love all forms and types of music. Heavy metal is not what I sing in the shower to but it’s what I listen to vent any pent up feelings.

Again, I challenge you to listen to different genres that you stay away from and if you feel extra daring put them on your phone or ipod.
