"So you work to earn money and then spend it on things like this?" Jin queried as he ran his hands along the clothes that hung from the rails. I held up a plain white shirt to the angel as I nodded and tried to find a size that would fit his wide shoulders.
"Yes, unfortunately that is basically what life is about." I told him as I confidently grabbed the next size up and added it to our cart as I kept moving along the aisles and looking at some black shirts next. I didn't want to spend a fortune on his clothes considering that he and I would be the only ones who would see them.
I also wanted him to have a good experience of earth's customs. I don't know what happens in the heavens but from what I can tell it's centred around toga's and very itchy hand-me-downs.
"You don't have to get me many of these clothes. They will not get as dirty as you'd think," Jin said as he inspected a pair of jeans, "I don't plan on diving into anymore dumpsters."
His humour was something that I always found comforting yet oddly charming at the same time. His ability to grin and joke about any situation was something that gave him his character.
"I've got you two shirts now so I'll get you a pair of jeans and then a jacket in case it gets cold." I told him as I looked at his waist for a moment before grabbing a pair of jeans and holding them to his waist- being cautious of a certain area.
That was the last thing I wanted to happen.
As I put the jeans into the cart I turned around a corner and made a start to the jacket section. In the cart I already had a pair of shoes for him, and a cap in case it gets sunny and he wanted to protect his rather pale skin.
As we approached the counter I saw from the corner of my eye that Jin was alert, his eyes darting over his shoulder as he stood closely behind me with his hands crossing over his waist as he scanned the shop.
It looked like he was looking for something..
Or someone.
I didn't want to question it while I was at the counter. I greeted the cashier with a smile and made polite small talk as he scanned my items and put them into a bag for me. Once I was told the amount I payed with my card before grabbing the single bag and walking away with the angel following behind me.
"Jin are you ok?" I asked him as I watched him place a hand to my shoulder and lower his head to my ear level as he began to whisper.
As soon as he started to speak the noise around me fell flat and the only noise that I could hear was Jin's voice as he started to whisper through the silence.
"We have to mask your aura," he told me in a pressured voice, "there was something back there that means to do you harm. The best way I can protect you now is if we go into an extremely crowded place."
I headed his words in the eerie silence that he had created and immediately headed towards the food court. I don't know what happened or what Jin did but the silence was anything but comforting. There were people around, their mouths moving as if they were having conversations, but I heard nothing.
"I know the silence is bad but I just needed you to focus. You're doing well (Y/N), it'll be over in a few moments." Jin whispered with his other hand now on my other shoulder as he closely followed me to where I was going.
As I hopped off of the escalator I looked to the food court and felt my breath hitch in my throat at the amount of people that were in the room.
And the amount of angels that were there.
"Remember that the other people cannot see the angels, only you can because of your aura. Don't forget that and try not to stare," Jin led me over to a table and sat me down before he exchanged glances with some of the angels around him before he leant over and whispered into my ear once more,
"I'll be back soon. Please be alert."
With that he vanished, it was like he was never there at all, and the commotion of the foot traffic returned to bless my longing eardrums. As I looked around I saw the angels and their different features.
There was a female one with off-white wings and black spots with striking blue eyes, a male with chestnut brown wings stood close by her as his hand was placed against the shoulder of the person he was with.
There were maybe half a dozen more that surrounded my eyesight, all of them looking between one another as if they were sharing conversations. No doubt talking about my aura- the thing of light that Jin always talked about.
Suddenly there was an angel who approached me with a tray of food in her palms as she placed it down in front of me with a soft smile- as if she were trying to tell me that everything was going to be ok.
"Please eat, o' prohectical one," she began, using a tongue of language that sounded so ancient yet so simple, "it will calm your mind and minimise your aura so we may protect you."
Before I could ask her if she knew what was happening, she left and walked away from the table as if she was walking by- acting as if she had never said anything at all. I stared at my shopping bag that was full of Jin's clothes before I looked down to the tray of food that had been placed before me.
I felt worried about Jin but tried my best to calm myself as it would make the angels around me more calm as well- and created a better environment for them to remain focused.
"Be safe, Jin."
