My name is Macy Miller. Seventeen years old, lived in Omaha ever since I could remember. The same apartment with my mom, in the suburbs.
Things changed a lot, ever since we were abandoned by my dad when I was four years old.
This is our story.

I remember it all too well.
She was lying motionless on the white bathroom tiles.
Her eyes were distant and hazy before they slowly closed shut and no matter what I said to her she wouldn't move, she couldn't even speak.
"Mom, please, talk to me. What's wrong?"
I held her numb hands between my own small palms and sat at her side, begging her to wake up.
My seven year old self was terrified and I didn't know what to do, I thought she was dead. She nearly was.
I saw a small trail of circular little tablets next to her. The white tablets were familiar to me, I had been used to seeing my mom swallow them down with her coffee every morning.
"For the headaches" she would say every time smiling wearily and sighing with every swallow.
I picked up the box of pills lying open beside her and put them in my pocket. I was young, but old enough to sense that something terrible had happened.
I cried helplessly, running through our small apartment and rushed out the door.
I knocked on the closest neighbours door, a bright red painted door different to all the others. A small sallow skinned women greeted me.
I vaguely recognised her, seeing her climb the staircases laden down with shopping bags. I knew I could trust her.
She had asked me what my name was.
Her name was Maria. She had kind eyes and I felt safe to talk to her.
I tried to explain between sobs what had happened even though I didn't understand why.
In minutes she had followed me into my apartment along with her eight year old son and they called the ambulance.
I can vaguely remember their faces, very similar with dark hair and kind eyes.
The told me that everything would be ok and I tried to believe them.
A daunting silence loomed over us and the boy squeezed my hand tightly, trying to reassure me.He must of been as scared and confused as I was.
Sitting silently in the ambulance I looked over at her lifeless body spread across the stretcher and I tried to imagine what I would do if my mom died, I didn't have any other family.
Once we arrived at the hospital the doctors had asked me what had happened to her.
I sat on the sturdy chair swinging my legs.
I hadn't said a word to anyone, the hospital terrified me. I couldn't remember ever walking into a hospital.
He looked down at me impatiently shifting his glasses on his head.
"Just tell him what you can it can help your mom" the boy whispered.
I slowly looked up at the doctor and reached into my pocket pulling out the container.
I passed it to him silently, I must have known that it could of helped. The image of my Mom, gulping back her coffee followed by the white pills ran through my mind over and over.
