My phone was going off in the kitchen.
I ran from my bedroom, tripping over all the contents spread across my tiny floor space.
I picked it up at the very last ring.
"You took your sweet time to pick up" Eva drawled down the phone.
I rolled my eyes automatically. Mom looked up from her magazine and raised her eyebrows at me.
"Where are you?"
"That's the thing" she began.
"Yes?" I prompted.
"I'm at the ground floor and I'm too lazy"
I laughed, she couldn't be serious.
I felt a huge weight lift off my shoulder, just by hearing Eva's voice. Everything felt normal again and I forgot and Brian and my mom for a few seconds.
"So you want me to come down?" I guessed.
"Bitch you guessed it!" she yelled down the phone. I swiftly hung up and told mom where I was going, to rescue my damsel in distress.
She nodded knowingly, ten years of Eva Martinez and she had gotten used to the madness.
I closed the apartment door lightly behind me and began jogging down the staircase, the steps squeaking with each step I took.
Six flights of stairs later I could hear the distant sound of music playing.
Surely enough when I reached the end of the stairs Eva was sprawled across the bottom step listening to music.
"You know some people want to get passed"
She jumped with a fright and spun around quickly and looked up at me with big terrified blue eyes. Her face relaxed once she saw it was me.
"Idiot" she muttered.
"C'mon" I said dragging her up off the floor.
She linked my arm and we began slowly trudging up the stairs I grabbed the banister pulling us up. We walked these steps together a million times, it was routine.
"We made it" Eva gasped. I smiled and opened the door, we were back inside safe and sound.
The corridors and halls of City View Tower weren't the nicest, I always got an unsettling feeling when I was out alone.
But as soon as I stepped into my apartment, I was safe. I felt protected and familiar with our homely surroundings.
Eva basically grew up here with me.
She greeted my mom and we disappeared into my room. I realised that I had big news for her, I just had no way to say it.
I let her ramble on about school and dance for a while, letting my thoughts run back and forth through my mind.
I hadn't realised my hands were shaking.
"Macy what's up?" Eva asked confusedly.
Me eyes met her blue ones, full of concern and interest.
I gulped, my throat felt dry. How was I going to say this.
"Eva" I began.
"Go on, you can tell me" she said gently.
"My mom met a guy" I said plainly.
Eva's mouth dropped in surprise
"Wow that's great!" She exclaimed.
I bit my lip looking down at my hands.
"It's been months and months. Eva I'm moving into his for the rest of the summer" I said quietly.
Eva's face was blank trying to process what I was saying.
I felt hot tears trickle down my cheeks.
I lay my head down in my head and let myself cry, it felt like I had been crying a lot lately.
I felt Eva's arm wrap around my shoulder and she pulled me in closer to her.
"It's ok" she murmured.
"He's lives on the other side of the city, he's rich as hell Eva. And-"
I blurted out my words in between sobs, I was surprised she could even understand me.
"He has a son" I added.
"That mightn't necessarily be a bad thing?" Eva said helpfully.
"He's our age and goes to St. Anthony's" I scoffed.
Eva stifled a laugh.
"Well.. This should be interesting" she joked.
I sat up wiping away my tears and Eva propped a pillow up against a back.
"C'mon let's watch a movie" she said and pulled my laptop up towards us.
I dived beneath my duvet and pulled it around the two of us.
I lay back comfortably against the head rest, Eva to my left hand side.
"Forgot about it" she said "Everything can still be the same"
She clicked on the movie and we snuggled in and began to watch it.
I wish that she was right, that nothing would change. But I took her advice I was gonna forget about it and enjoy the few days I had left.
Before things really did start to change.
