24th June 1995. 21:28.
Harry won. Voldemort returned. Cedric died.
All in one night.
Two bodies hit the ground in front of us, the triwizard cup falling from their hands. The band played their music, and the crowd cheered. I realised who it was. Harry and Cedric. I screamed in happiness. Hogwarts won! Cedric won! Harry, my godson, won!
I ran over to them with the other teachers, and that's when I realised. Harry was badly hurt, and he was sobbing. Cedric's eyes had that same look. The dead look.
"Oh god." I whispered. My eyes felt hot, and burning tears streamed down my face. Dumbledore came beside me. I pulled Harry towards me, forcing him to let go of Cedric's body. Harry seized Dumbledore's wrist, and looked straight into our eyes as I held him up.
"He's back." Harry whispered to us. "He's back. Voldemort."
"What?" I whispered. I froze. "Harry, what happened?"
The news of Cedric's death spread like wild fire. It started off a whisper, then into a shout and then into an orchestra of screeches, piercing the night.
"Harry, let go!" I heard the minister say, trying to pry Cedric's body from Harry's hands. But Harry did not let go.
"Harry, you can't help him now." Dumbledore said gently. "Let go."
"He wanted me to bring him back." Harry muttered. I nodded and held his wrists. "He wanted me to bring him back to his parents."
"That's right, Harry... Just let go now..." Dumbledore picked him up and put him on his feet. Harry wobbled. I held him up.
"Harry, I'm so sorry." I told him as panic rised. His face was blurry with tears. "What happened out there, Harry?" I gave him a hug. He was motionless. "You're going to be fine."
Mad-Eye Moody walked over to me. He whispered in my ear. "Dumbledore told me to take Harry. You need to help out with the other kids."
"But-" I said, sure that Dumbledore instructed Harry to stay put, but Moody had already pulled Harry away. I turned to the traumatic scene behind me, and I entered it. Amos Diggory, Cedric's father was crying over his body. The students were screaming all over the place. I wanted to join them, and to scream into the night, but I was a teacher, and I needed to help.
I ran to find the two gryffindor prefects and pulled them away from their friends. I got the ravenclaw and slytherin prefects, and then I slowly approached Fiona, the Hufflepuff prefect, and one of Cedric's best friends. "Do you think you can handle prefect duties?" I asked gently.
She shook her head, and let out a huge sob. So instead, I went to find the head boy and girl.
"I know this is sad but you need to get your houses back to the common room!" I shouted at them over the noise. "You two," I gestured to the teary-eyed head boy and girl. "you sort out the Hufflepuff's."
They nodded, and ran off, sniffing, screaming at their houses. I then joined the teachers circled around Cedric's body. I didn't bother notifying any of the teachers of my instructions. They were occupied.
Dumbledore searched the grounds. "Where's Harry?" He said. He looked at me.
"Moody took him." I told him. His face morphed into anger. I had never seen him angry before. He turned to the teachers and other ministry officials surrounding the body.
"Minister," Dumbledore addressed Cornelius Fudge. "I am trusting you to take care of this. Minerva, Severus, Dorothy." He started to walk. "You're coming with me."
"Stupefy!" Dumbledore threw the door of Moody's office onto the floor, blasting it to pieces. Dumbledore stepped in and examined Moody's unconscious body. Snape walked over to a strange looking mirror, and McGonagall and I ran to Harry. I hugged him tightly, and let out a sob.
"Oh, Harry." I said, holding him. "Are you ok?"
He hugged me back. "I'm fine."
"Come along, Potter." McGonagall said as I let go and stood him up. "Hospital wing..."
"No," said Dumbledore sharply. "He needs to understand."
"Dumbledore!" McGonagall and I protested.
"No." Dumbledore said. "He needs to understand."
I was re-united with Sirius again, sitting in the familiar office of Albus Dumbledore, listening intently to Harry's story telling. It was horrid. Voldemort had returned. Cedric died at the hands of him. Harry dueled with Voldemort, and saw a ghost of Lily and James.
I gave Harry another hug once he stopped talking.
"You are so brave!" I told him, squeezing him tightly. "I am so proud of you!"
"I will say it again," said Dumbledore."You have shown bravery beyond anything I could have expected of you tonight, Harry. You have shown bravery equal to those who died fighting Voldemort at the height of his powers. You have shouldered a grown wizard's burden and found yourself equal to it - and you have now given us all we have a right to expect. You will come with me to the hospital wing. I do not want you returning to the dormitory tonight. A Sleeping Potion, and some peace . . . Sirius, Dorothy, would you like to stay with him?"
We nodded and I let go of him. Sirius transformed into his dog animagus, and followed Harry, Dumbledore and I down the Gargoyle staircase and into the hallway. We made our way to the hospital wing, where Harry was greeted by the Weasleys. Harry was sent straight to bed on Dumbledore's orders, with a sleeping potion. He gave all of us permission to stay with Harry for the night.
Harry drifted off to sleep, and everybody picked a bed to sleep on. I picked a bed as close to Harry as I could, and Took off some of my clothes so I was in a vest top and shorts. And my necklace. I wasn't too happy to be sleeping in them, but I had to deal. I gave Harry a quick kiss on the cheek, and settled down in my bed, Sirius curling up on the end. I kissed his head, and he barked out a laugh.
"How many times have we been in here?" I laughed. It was the only way to soften the mood. I still felt dead inside. He barked out another laugh, and I closed my eyes.
I couldn't sleep. After a minute of nightmare thoughts, I got out of bed. Sirius wasn't asleep either. I tapped him, and he jumped up. I picked up my cardigan and put it on, and walked into the bathroom of the hospital wing. He followed me. I locked the door behind us and shut the blinds.
"You can be human now." I whispered to him. He was himself again.
"What's wrong?" He asked.
"Can I have a hug?" I asked him. He put his arms out and I ran to him, and let out a silent sob. Tears began falling like rain. "It was horrible." I told him. "Cedric was a teenager, he wasn't even eighteen yet. And to see him dead on the floor, with the same look as Lily and James," I sobbed again. "It was horrible." I repeated.
"I know." He said, squeezing me. "Voldemort is an evil, horrible murderer and we are going to help in his destruction." He looked at me with his safe grey eyes. "The order of the phoenix is back."
I smiled. "I love you."
"Me too." He said. He kissed my forehead, and transformed back into a dog, and we left to the hospital wing, and I finally got some sleep.
