There are moments in life that awkward can't even begin to describe.
It is in moments like those you swear you can see the tension thick and heavy in the air, you can almost touch it.
This is one of said moments.
I stare at my plate of some vegan delicacy Cece may enjoy and I just stare. What more can I do or say that's going to alleviate this tension. A brief cough is heard, momentarily dissolving the silence, but the awkwardness is so heavy, it swallows up the sound.
I'm between Jonathan and Mason and honestly, I can't tell which is worse; the fact that Jonathan looks unbothered by the question or the fact that Mason is more interested in something his younger cousin sitting to the right of him said.
"I don't think you heard me," Mrs Richmond speaks up again. "I asked if -"
"Oh, we heard you!" Jonathan interrupts. I peek up at him to see he has a courteous smile plastered painfully on his face. "We heard you just fine, Mrs. Richmond. I'm however giving you the chance to retract your question."
Mrs. Richmond frowns... At least I think she's trying to frown. Her face looks so stiff and I'm guessing it's as a result of botox or something of the sort.
She's a pretty woman, I'll give her that. Mason says she's had work done to her face, but she looks great and youthful. Flawless fair face adorned with minimal makeup, brown hair in a slick bun, pearl necklace around her neck which matches her pearl earrings and her clothing... She's gorgeous in her bright pink halter-neck dinner gown that fits her like a glove.
While she looks classy, her question lacks class and I'm so close to just running away from here.
"Why would I retract my question?" She asks. I think she's genuine. I can't tell.
"I wouldn't call it proper to be this curious in our sex lives, would you?" Jonathan toys with his food as he speaks and I just know he's not planning on eating anything.
"So, it's now improper to want to know if my child's being safe?" Mr. Richmond butts in.
The second I saw Mr. Richmond, I decided I don't like him. He's a shorter man with really sharp facial features. He looks like he could be a model, but not a very nice one. His blue eyes look dead to me. Not a single emotion behind them. I haven't seen him smile once since we got here and judging from all the pictures we passed in the living room, I don't think he smiles much.
"Dad, you're ruining the vibes here. Mom, please don't ask me if I'm a top or a bottom or how often I have sex. There's a kid at the table." Mason finally decides to put us out of our misery.
