A SOFT MELODY EMITTED FROM THE OLD GRAND PIANO, Louis' fingers grazing the keys while Mallory couldn't help but watch closely. The two teenager's shoulders brushed against each other as they both had taken a place on the bench in front of the angelic instrument. Louis' eyes were narrowed in concentration as he stared at the assortment of black and white keys. Mallory had searched her mind to put a name to the song he had been playing, but that action alone proved futile as she had no recollection of it.
It had been a while since they dragged themselves through the school's gates, two new individuals accompanying the exhausted teenagers. Both the girl and the boy had yet to awaken, and while some of the group members had been slightly cautious about allowing strangers into their tight-knit group, they were also curious. Mallory had been one of these people as they had intrigued her, seeing as strangers didn't commonly enter their lives.
The boy had seemed unharmed for the most part but was still currently resting, most likely from an unhealthy amount of sleep deprivation. The girl had suffered a minimal head injury and so they had resorted to taping one of her hands to the metal beam of a bunk bed, just as a precaution for an unlikely turn of events. Marlon had been the one to suggest that.
Mallory's interest in the pair had stemmed from her desire to see what was beyond what she always knew like the back of her hand. She wondered how people who didn't have long-lasting communities handled the world, how their behaviors changed when their lives were at stake every day. She often tried to imagine how her life would be, and if she'd survive. She always was someone who planned ahead, in the slim chance their peaceful existence had been disrupted completely.
This was also part of the reason she had such trouble accepting the safe zone rule, as sometimes being too cautious led to more casualties in the future. And whether that was from an unknown threat settling into the forest surrounding the school, or something without a physical form--like starvation--she didn't want to figure it out. She wanted to stay alive, for however long she was supposed to.
While death didn't necessarily scare her, not knowing what was beyond and having your very form be pried from the world didn't seem all the desirable. Most people believed your soul remained, to guide those who had still walked the earth despite them being unable to see you. Mallory wasn't sure if she believed that. Death in her mind sounded like the epitome of hell, yet the waking world also wasn't the greatest experience from the point of view of the broken teenager.
"What are you doing?"
At the sound of a much more boyish voice, both Mallory and Louis paused their movements and their eyes flickered to the entrance of the music room where the strange boy stood, his eyes wide with curiosity. Louis smiled charmingly, flipping one leg over the bench and instead sat sideways. That action alone was a silent invitation for the boy to come closer.
