FEAR ENCAPSULATED MALLORY'S ENTIRE BEING AS HER DEMONS CLAWED THEIR WAY THROUGH HER BODY, sinking their rotten teeth into her burning flesh to infect her mind and soul with a hellish nightmare. The young girl's hands gripped the worn fabric of her mahogany blanket, her eyes darted frantically behind her closed eyelids and one singular tear trailed down her right cheek. While the waking world was silent, her mind had been plagued by the sounds of her fears and sorrow, all looping throughout her brain and disabling her from merely waking up to find her monsters were never truly there.
She was in a black abyss, unable to see anything to its full extent, but even if her eyes worked as they should have there would be nothing besides the dreadful darkness. She knew the body she occupied had been her own, but in this warped dreamscape, she felt as if she was experiencing an out-of-body moment.
She could hear the heart-wrenching accusations of how she failed to save her brother. Why didn't she save him? Although these voices had no physical form, she felt as if she was being watched from all around. Giving these echoing voices a body almost made her feel slightly better, knowing they were there and not intangible ghosts lingering in her subconscious. However, that was the truth. She knew these voices that were full of so much hatred were a reflection of herself. How she cursed at herself for not trying harder. How she continued to fall. Down.
Finally, as if her mind had taken pity on her, she was wrenched from her fitful sleep, her eyes opening while she was unable to move, glued to the bed. She was scared. Afraid to glance around the darkened dorm room in case she caught sight of the physical being she created to make herself feel better. Would it be human? She didn't know.
After several minutes, she was released from her paralysis, her body automatically raising as she continued to grip the mahogany blanket tight. She wiped at her eyes, her legs swinging over to allow her feet to plant themselves upon the cold, hardwood floor. She rubbed at her arms, goosebumps rising in response to the breeze that came in through her slightly cracked window. It was just one of the things she forgot to fix, despite it cracking nearly three months ago as a result of a branch that had fallen.
She maneuvered her way towards her desk, using the small amount of light coming naturally from the moon. Her hand glided over the splintered wood before she touched the cool metal of her flashlight. She turned it on, instantly flickering the light across her room in case something snuck up on her. She almost convinced herself to go back to bed and hide under the covers, hoping that whatever haunted her would disappear. However, she needed to go somewhere else. Somewhere far safer.
