──── Mallory Thompson

MALLORY ALWAYS HATED BEING VULNERABLE. To her, to be vulnerable, to expose your weaknesses to the world was to lose. This thought had transpired from her earlier days, way before the world had fallen victim to an intangible force. Those who knew her closely would agree that her upbringing had not been one to look back on and smile about, Marlon knew this firsthand as well. The twins were a product of a broken home, one rich in alcoholism and skirting around problems. From a young age, both Marlon and Mallory had learned to sweep their problems underneath a rug, and sometimes they did this due to the ingrained fear that they would be punished if they were to falter. As a result of this, Mallory had made a vow to herself to never allow another individual to get a glimpse of the chaotic mess in her mind, for it wasn't at all pretty.

Although this task alone was proving to grow increasingly difficult as days went on.

Mallory retreated into the comfort of her room moments after ending her part in the card game outside. Her chest had grown significantly tighter since she found her way into solitude, and despite her breath being even and calm, she thought she was suffocating. She unconsciously touched the exposed flesh on her neck, her eyelids closed abruptly and her eyes darted underneath the skin as she stood there. Feeling this way brought back all kinds of nasty memories she'd rather forget.

A knock on her bedroom door caused the young teenager to jump in fright, a hand falling against her chest where her heart was beating rapidly inside. She had always been amazed how it could beat so fast yet never suddenly just overload and push her into a state of shock or maybe even death. That is why she was determined to not allow her walls to be broken as she wanted to ensure that her precious organ had been preserved and no more wounded than it already was.

Mallory crossed the room and opened the door only wide enough to peek through and for some reason she wasn't surprised to see who had visited her at this time. There stood Louis, his hands tucked behind his back as he patiently waited for his blonde friend to acknowledge his presence.

"Hey..." he greeted, bouncing back and forth on his feet.

Mallory opened the door wider and allowed the teenage boy to enter her dimly lit room, thanks to the two lanterns placed on different sides of the space. Mallory was not all caught off guard by his late-night visit as the pair had made it a routine now and then to engage in conversation at this time. Sometimes it would be Mallory walking to his door and other times Louis would make the effort. It always seemed that Louis knew the right moments to show up as she had always been consumed by a wave of melancholic thoughts whenever he seemed to arrive. She found herself enjoying that as it was a nice distraction from the nagging voice inside her head.
