after what seemed to be a never ending shift of stereotypical la residents ordering over complicated drinks, her shift in the small independent cafe was over. there was a strict no phones policy for all staff, even when on their breaks from the owners who self identified as 'too hipster for modern technology" even though all orders were taken on iPads whilst large bluetooth speakers played music.
as cliche as the cafe was, violet couldn't help but feel at home there, the whole place covered from head to toe with plants and the shelves covered with countless different bags of different coffee beans, unlike the corporate chains that littered the streets and offered a sterile shop with a singular burnt tasting coffee. not to mention the free drinks she was allowed to help herself to throughout her shift. not once did violet leave without her hands shaking from over-caffeination.
after yelling goodbye to her coworkers she left the building, her heart racing from the anxiety of checking her phone, the realisation of what had happened this morning only just dawning upon her.
she reluctantly called david, placing the phone up to her ear and secretly hoping he would be too busy to pick up.
"violet" a shocked voice gasped through the phone as she chuckled lightly, "thats me" she replied, an immense feeling of guilt washing over her as david began to explain that he had been calling her all morning, scared that she was never going to speak to him again.
"david I'm so sorry, we have a no phone rule which i know sounds like the most ridiculous excuse ever but honestly spend 5 minutes with my bosses and you wouldn't doubt it for a minute." she replied, cutting off his nervous rambling.
"why didn't you tell me?" he sighed as violet frowned, "how could i tell you we weren't allowed on phones if I'm not allowed on my phone" she joked nervously, trying to distract david from the real problem. "you know thats not what I'm asking violet" he groaned back, clearly growing impatient with the way she danced around his question; something that she always seemed to do.
"it sounds crazy but i love my schedule. i love going to work, i love going to uni and i of course love spending time with all of you. whether it means we are watching a film and relaxing or doing something crazy and dangerous for a bit, i even love staying up until crazy hours in the morning to help you edit. i don't want to give any of that up, especially just for a few more hours in bed. but i know how sweet and considerate all of you are and how you wouldn't let me do all of those things that i love so much if you knew my schedule." she replied truthfully.
"why don't you come over now and we can have a nice relaxing day" david replied, smiling to himself at how amazing and considerate the girl he was speaking to was. "as amazing as that sounds, i have two lectures then i promised my boss that i would come back and do a few hours overtime because the two that are meant to be working both called in sick. but its always empty at that time of day seeing as most people have already had their overpriced caffeine fix for the day so i get to do some of my essay thats due next week. and then after that if i can somehow get ollie to forgive me we are meant to be doing a night time photography shoot for one of our projects" she replied, becoming aware of how busy her life sounded when she said it out loud.
"and to think i felt sorry for myself because i had to record one sketch today" he joked back. these were the kind of comments the girl hated, she didn't want people to compare their life to hers. she was simply doing what she had to do, just like everyone else. and to be honest pouring a few coffees and taking a few photos seemed much easier than creating content for millions of fans to watch and critique.
"why don't we do something at the weekend? i don't work and i should be done with all my school stuff if i keep to schedule?" she replied, causing him to immediately agree before regrettably having to hang up due to jonah banging at his door for some slightly concerning, unknown reason.
she felt happy with how that went with david, of course she wished that he had never found out but at least he was understanding, and not annoyed that she hadn't shared such a big part of her life with him. she knew speaking to ollie wasn't going to be as simple, and that there would be lots of yelling. thankfully she didn't have the same timetable as him today, meaning that he couldn't embarrass the pair in front of their peers by having a very personal argument in the middle of the halls.
she would invite him to her work, that way it wasn't an awkward one on one situation and if it got uncomfortable she could distract herself by going back behind the counter, pretending she had something to do. plus, it had such a peaceful atmosphere there was no way the two could raise their voices.
the time had come, she had just finished pouring her only customer so far their drink, which was thankfully takeaway, meaning the two of them had the whole cafe to themselves. "hey" she softly greeted, straight away turning her back to him to make them both a drink, "violet i don't want a drink, i want to talk" the boy sighed, his words laced with the familiar angry tone he seemed to have way too often with her.
"just go sit down and i'll bring them over" she snapped back, cursing herself for giving in to her annoyance when she really invited him here to make amends.
she bought the two coffee based drinks over to a small table in the far corner, the one that he always tucked himself away in when he came to visit her here. he smiled softly at the once unwanted drink and took a sip, "you remembered my favourite" he smirked.
"i'm so sorry for everything. my life is just a little hectic right now and I've been an awful friend to you. i have a hard time saying no to david and his friends and that might be something i need to work on. i love spending time with them but i also love spending time with you ollie. i love how easy and simple it is between the two of us, how we can just sit in your bed and eat and talk for hours. I'm really bad with feeling like i owe my time to certain people. i see you every morning and most days at university and when that is over i feel as though i owe other people my time because otherwise I'm being selfish but really the only person I'm being selfish to is you. i value your friendship so so much and I'm so annoyed with myself for being so stupid and inconsiderate with it" violet explained, pouring her heart out to the boy in front of her whose face suddenly turned sour just as she had finished her rambling talking.
"did you invite him here?" he snapped, ignoring everything the girl had said and causing her to look round in confusion, letting out a sigh when she saw a familiar face pop their head around the door, eyes lighting up when they finally settled on violet.
"david what are you doing here?" she frantically asked, walking over to him in hope to persuade him to leave before he made conversation with ollie. "everyone for some reason turned up uninvited at my house and you said it was always empty at your work so i bought my laptop and thought i could do some editing in peace" he explained, expecting to have gotten much happier response from his friend.
"ollie, david just came to do some work" she said to the boy behind her, who had stormed over to the two while david was speaking. "you expect me to believe that? how did he even know where you worked?" he growled back, taking violets hand and spinning her away from david to face him. "sorry to interrupt but you had your snapchat location on" he mumbled, not looking up from the floor as he spoke.
"you need to choose violet, me or him?" ollie demanded, violet laughing before realise he was being deadly serious.
"seriously ollie grow up" she sighed rolling her eyes at the boys childishness.
"me or him"
