the girl leant back onto the harsh pebbles, a thin cotton blanket being her only protection from their pain. the blood orange sun beat down on her body, sending down warm tingles to trickle through her. her hair cascades across the stones, fanning out around her face where a small smile sat.
she began to think back to last year, to all the wonderful adventures she faced, the brown haired boy and his gang of mischievous friends.
'this has to be some kind of practical joke'
the way his lips turned upwards into a smirk as he held up his camera.
'if you loved me you wouldn't even think about taking that job'
the way the twinkle in his eye shon brighter than the sun that beat down above her.
'you don't need to take that job violet, i'll pay for you rent, hell i'll even buy you a house. i'll do anything to make you stay'
the way his face crinkled in excitement when he was surprising his friends.
'why don't i speak to my manager, he knows everyone in LA, you'll have people begging for you to work with them'
the way he never went a day without telling her how much he loved her.
'i love you violet, please don't do this to me'
the way he grasped his camera in his hands, eagerly awaiting his next funny moment to capture and share with his audience.
'fine, clearly you don't care about me so why don't you just leave, it's obviously what you want'
the way he cried as he watched her pack her belongings.
'forget what i said, don't leave me, please'
the way he forced her to let him drive her to the airport.
'don't do it, don't get out the car. we can forget all of this happened and go back to my house and make cookies and order pizza and i'll even let you put on one of those cheesy 80s films you love so much. you can move in with me until you find another job and you can pay me in me those amazing brownies you bake. you're my whole life violet i don't know what i'll do it you get out of this car and onto that plane.'
the way he stood and watched her leave, the sparkle of excitement in his hazel eyes being replaced with hopelessness and that playful smirk turning into a frown so deep, it made him unsure if he could ever smile again.
'i'll never forget you violet evergreen, and i'll never stop loving you'
violet sighed, 'think happy thoughts' she muttered to herself, cursing her mind for wondering back into the pit of sadness she had been drowning in for the past year.
she kicked her heels off, burying her blistered feet into the cool sand that lay beneath the rocks and focused on the crashing of waves before her. her smart black dress had become creased and damp, but she ought not worry, her wardrobe housing duplicates among duplicates. she felt as though it was all she wore these days, not even remembering the last time she was allowed to put creativity into putting an outfit together, carefully matching unique patterns or colours, not leaving the house until she was completely satisfied even though it always made her late. She thought back to her first day of her new job, her chunky, violet coloured heels clicked along the floor obnoxiously as her pale yellow skirt flowed behind her, leaving behind a trail of snickers and whispers. the dainty white top she had chosen causing a stir with the men of the office, their hungry eyes tearing through it as if they could all see beneath its light material. violet rarely felt embarrassed, it was simply not in her nature, yet stood in a room of smart suits and knee length pencil skirts and monochromatic blouses made the girl wish the ground would swallow her up whole. she quickly came to realise that she was naive to think that her highly competitive creative role at an internationally famous fashion magazine would allow her to keep any of her charming originality.
it was days like that that she missed her time in LA most.
As the sun began to set she made her way back to her hotel room, a place that she could never imagine calling 'home', no matter how many months she had been staying there. truth be told she didn't really have a home anymore, sure there was her apartment back in london but she, at this point, had spent less time away from it over the past year than days spent there. She was constantly on flights, jetting across europe, of course being a creative director having its perks- her flights had only ever been first class and the hotels she was put in never ceased to outstandingly amaze her. but what she had in money and privilege, she truly lacked in friends, relationships and even real happiness- all things she was never without last year.
her colleagues had written her off the second they met her, she reassured herself it was jealously, after all she was a mere 22 years old, working a job that no one that young and inexperienced had managed to achieve, but this often failed to ease her mind.
it seemed as though as soon as she closed her tired eyes, they were shooting open again, the chirping of her alarm clock ringing in her ears, almost as loud as the groan that escaped her lips.
this job would be the death of her.
