Playing Favorites

Unknown Number

"We're gonna be late for school." I groan, rolling off my girlfriend.

"We'll say home today." She pulls me towards her and runs her fingers up and down my arm.

"Thank you." I kiss her bare shoulder.

"I need to talk to you though." She moves her hand to hold my face.

"I think I know what you're going to say." I sigh and she strokes my cheek with her thumb.

"I really want to to be okay. I want you to be safe and I don't want to constantly be scared that you're going to hit someone in class or disappear for hours."

"Are we going today?" My heart is beating so fast it hurts.

"Not if you don't want to." She kisses my forehead. "I would like to but if you're not ready I'll tell Lily."

"Tell Lily?"

"She said she'd make the appointment. She has connections so we'd get the service free." I move to tuck my head in her bare chest then latch my lips around her left nipple. She moans, letting me suck for a second before she scoots away. "Baby, no suckies till after we talk about this."

I pout, kick my legs, and then turn my back to her. I don't know why as soon as we ever start talking anything serious I instantly fall into little space. Well I guess I do. I don't want to deal with this so that's my response.

"Should we wait till-" she's cut off by my phone. I take it from my nightstand and check the screen.

Unknown number

Literally no one calls me, probably wrong number. I slid the answer button and put the phone to my ear.

"Hello?" Silence. "..Hello?" I shrug and just as I'm about to hang up I hear him.

"Riley?" He asks confidently.

I start to fell dizzy. My body hurts and small beads of sweat start to form on my neck and forehead. My hands feel clammy.

"How did you get this number?"

Sarah looks at me concerned.

"I want to see you."

"..No."

"Ry please jus-"

I hang up the phone and toss it to the other end of the bed. My heart is pounding even harder, it hurts. I feel Sarah take my hands in hers then pull me into her lap. I didn't even realize I was fighting her until her until she has her arms tightly around me. She quietly whispers in my ear,

"Sh babygirl, I'm here. Mommy's right here." I settle down a bit and hold her tightly.

This is the best feeling in the world. Our naked bodies tangled together, her holding my waist, and whispering in my ear. My tears are running down my cheeks and onto her back.

"Let's make some pancakes okay?" She suggests and I nod. "You wanna talk about it while we cook?"

I nod my head and she pulls a T-shirt over herself before tossing one to me. She holds my hand and leads me down the stairs to the kitchen.

"Okay." I sigh and she starts to gather the things we need.

"I had just turned 16.." I start. "I came home from school and a woman was on the floor..bleeding."
