She rolled her eyes, "I was fine Alec." She said back to him, realizing how he was definitely over reacting. (Y/N) walked to their mirror and looked at the cut on her face, hissing as her finger ran over it.
Alec was angry with her because she had gone out by herself to get their food from Jade Wolf. While she was there someone from Luke's pack had hit on her, and when she rejected him he had hit her- throwing his claws across her face. It was a good thing Luke was there, he had bolted to her side and ripped the pack member off of her. He apologized profusely and walked her home, and now she and Alec were in their room fighting.
"Fine?" Alec said, hands clasped over the back of the couch. "You're not fine (Y/N), you're bleeding." He exclaimed. Alec searched for her eyes in the reflection of the mirror.
(Y/N) didn't meet his gaze in the mirror, her eyes fixed now on the ground. She hated fighting with Alec, sure Alec was naturally angry but not with her. They had been together for almost a year now, and they had fought a few times but nothing like this, Alec had never been this mad at her.
"It will heal Alec." She said softly, dropping her hand from the cut. Truth be told she was lucky it wasn't worse, the wolf could have killed her in seconds flat.
She was a Mundane. Alec didn't understand, that it was okay for her to be heal naturally. He couldn't handle that if she fell and scrapped her knee that he couldn't just throw a rune on it and fix it. That was often their biggest fight, Alec not understanding that she wasn't as fragile as he thought she was.
Alec dropped his head, "That's not the point (Y/N)." His voice was still dangerous, a tone that she hadn't heard him use around her. It sent a shiver up her spine, but at the same time anger boiled deep in her vein at the fact that he thought of her as fragile.
She whipped around to look at him, "Then what is the point Alec?" (Y/N) asked, her eyes blazing and hand clenched at her sides.
He looked flustered, anger spilling out of every pour of his body. "Because your a mundane!" He yelled, turning to face her as she moved to go and change her shirt. "Every situation that you're in is a million times more dangerous for you than it is for me!" Alec yelled, his hands poking the back of the couch in frustration.
Those words struck a nerve, her body tensed as he spoke. Alec knew that was a soft point for her, it was something that hit her hard. His mother, Maryse, hated the fact that he was with her, with a Mundane. She thought that (Y/N) would spoil the Lightwood name and that because she was a Mundane she was unworthy of Alec. To hear Alec repeat those same words felt like someone was driving a knife into her chest.
"I'm sorry I'm a Mundane that you have to protect all the time Alec." She hissed, tears starting to well in her eyes. "And I'm sorry that your mother is going to be pissed that I started something with the Wolf pack but I can take care of myself!" (Y/N) yelled, trying to prove her point to him.
"Are you kidding me?" Alec sleethed, his eyes widening with anger. "You think I'm mad because I have to protect you and because some asshole hit on you?" He asked her, his eyes searching hers for anything. "You could have died!" Alec yelled, pain clear in his voice as he yelled.
(Y/N) pressed her fingers to her temple, she had a massive headache from where her face had been scratched. This argument wasn't helping the throbbing pain behind her eyes, feeling it pulse against her enflamed skin.
"He could have killed you, or worse!" Alec said, trying to get it through her head just how reckless her behavior really was. Pain banged on his chest at the idea of her being alone with the guy from Jade Wolf. "And he probably would have if it hadn't been for Luke." He told her, feeling sick to his stomach about how he wasn't there for her.
Alec let go of the back of the couch and took a couple steps towards her. Normally she wouldn't have felt panicked by this, but she had never seen Alec so angered. Her heart beat a little faster as he advanced her.
She rolled her eyes, "Alec I can defend myself!" (Y/N) yelled back at her, feeling heat rise in her throat. "Stop being such an ass-"
(Y/N) stooped, recoiling as Alec quickly raised his hand. Her eyes screwed shut, her body falling backwards against the wall. She flinched back and held a hand to cover her face, prepared to get hit for the second time that night. After a moment without impact her eyes slowly opened, to see Alec comb his finger through his black hair. He raised his head with a confused look across his face.
She swallowed, processing what she had just done.
(Y/N) thought for a moment that he hadn't caught her reaction, that maybe he didn't recognize her actions. It took him a moment before his body tensed and his eyes widened as realization spread across his face. It was easy to see the second it dawned on him, his angry demeanor faded into that of a hurt one - it so heartbreaking that (Y/N) could feel herself start to cry- but it was gone just as fast as if came and Alec's anger was back.
He cleared his throat, afraid that his voice would break if he didn't, "What did you just do?" He asked carefully, trying to keep himself from sounding too angry.
(Y/N) has seen Alec mad before, she had seen him livid but this was worse. This kind of anger was worse, it was laced with pain. He was no longer yelling- god she wished he would go back to yelling- his voice was quiet, barely an audible whisper.
(Y/N) opened her mouth but nothing came out. It took her a minute of staring as his vexed expression before she was able to speak. "I didn't- I- Alec-" She was unable to form a coherent sentence, unable to find something to defend herself.
Alec out out a dry laugh- one that lacked all humor- before taking a step away from her. "You thought I was going to hit you." His voice broke, struggling to keep his hands at his side in order to keep her from flinching away from him again. "You're afraid of me." It was hard for Alec to find words, everything he wanted to say was getting stuck in his throat, stopped by the horror that was the events occurring around him. It was like he was stuck in a nightmare.
She wanted to go to him, to tell her she was sorry and that it was a mistake and he hadn't done anything wrong. But only part of that would have been true, Alec hadn't done anything wrong. She had been the one who reacted badly, there was nothing she could say to fix it.
Alec let out a deep sigh, shoving his hands in his pockets before he went towards the door. He was careful not to touch her as he blew past her, afraid that she would scream if he did. It was hard to breath, like the walls were closing in and Alec couldn't be in that room any longer.
There was no way to explain it, but (Y/N) had truly thought Alec was going to hit her. Not that she had any reason too, as much as everyone thought he was this hard shell he was anything but with her. Thinking about what had just happened, made her sick to her stomach because she knew Alec was.
Alec who took two months to ask her out because he didn't think she would say yes. Alec who held the door for her. Alec who played with her hair till she fell asleep. Alec who would hold her close when she woke up from nightmares in the middle of the night. Alec who loved her more than anything else.
How could she have possibly thought he would hit her?
