Dirt was smeared across (Y/N)'s face, her hair pulled in every direction but still she looked gracious. She spit dirt from her lips, rising to her feet and scanned the room with her eyes. Around her was darkness, she silently thanked herself for putting a Nightime Vison rune on before leaving the Institute, and an empty room. (Y/N) grumbled before treading towards the next door, if she saw one more behind this one she swore she would tear it off the hinges.

Maybe she should have brought Alec or Izzy with her, maybe Alec would keep her calm and Izzy would help fight off the various kinds of Demoms surrounding the ship. (Y/N) had gone looked for Jace, her boyfriend of almost a year, who had gone 'missing' a week ago. Everyone insisted that he was just run off, angry about a fight he had with Alec. But (Y/N) knew better, parabatai fought but Jace would never run away from his home over that.

Her shoulder collided with the door, the door gave away under her. (Y/N) gasped as she nearly fell into the next room, catching herself with a huff. When she caught her footing on the metal floor of the boat before looking up.

She tried to hold in a cry, her eyes landing on Jace. He was leaning against a metal pole in the middle of the room, his hands behind his back- probably cuffed together- and head thrown back against the metal. Blood pooled at the base of his throat, probably from where a blade was held against his skin. His skin was pale and his face was hallowed, his legs bent at different positions and clothes torn, blood stained as well.

"Jace." (Y/N) said, her breath short as she slid to her knees in front of him. Her hands reached out to touch his skin, which was cold under her finger tips.

His eyes fluttered open as she touched him, they widened as he saw her. "No." Jace cried, screwing his eyes shut in pain and turning his chin from her. "No please, not again." He whimpered.

She drew her hand back from her as if it burned her, shocked by his reaction. "Jace it's me." (Y/N) whispered, trying to remember the last time she had seen him this distraught.

He whimpered again. (Y/N) watched as he drew his knees closer together, she then decided the last time she saw him like this was the day he first came to New York- after his father had died. That was the last time she could remember him curled up- with knees to his chest- with so much pain in his face.

"No." That was the first word in minutes that he had said that was understandable. "No you're not here." Jace said to himself, his head facing the ground.

(Y/N) ran her eyes over him, her mouth slight gapped in shock. "Oh Jace." She mumbled, "He really did a number on you." (Y/N) told him with a gentle voice.

Jace whimpered again, his eyes finally meeting hers. They weren't the same golden flakes that normally looked back at her, they were a dull and matted brown at best.

"You aren't here." Jace said, venom clear in his voice. Pain plagued him when he saw her flinch, it was the first time he had felt a change in pain in days. "You can't be here, tell him that I won't fall for it." Jace hissed to her, his eyes shutting once more and his head knocking against the pole he was still attached to.

"Jace it's me, how can I make you see that?" She whispered to him, her eyes not leaving his but she could hear someone or something walking above them.

Jace looked up at her with haunted eyes, "Make me believe." He begged her, his eyes barely opened. It was a dangerous notion, to beg a demon to prove something to him. But he had to know, it was driving his mad not knowing what was real and what wasn't.

(Y/N) thought, racking her brain to find something that only she would know. She thought of telling him about how they sat upon the roof and watched the city lights, but that wasn't a secret. She thought of telling him about their first date- how he had taken her to a new diner she had been telling him about, how great he looked in a sleek black shirt- but that wasn't a secret either.

"Do you remember our first night together?" (Y/N) asked him, reaching behind him to start undoing the cuffs. She had been right, it took a knife to break them.

Jace nodded, gasping as the cuffs were released from him. The pressure on his wrists was gone, he pulled his hands around to grab at them. He watched as she carefully drew out a Stele, to draw an Iratze on his skin. He hissed at the contact, bumming at his familiarity.

(Y/N) drew on his skin carefully, "Do you how we moved together? How we fit together perfectly?" She asked him, finishing the Iratze and starting other runes that he would need to get them off this ship. "I told you that I would never be able to love anyone after you, that you were it for me." She said, not realizing that her nails were now digging into his sensitive skin.

Jace looked at her, watching her draw carefully on him. He remembered all the times she had runed him before, how her eyes narrowed in concentration and her finger nails would mark his skin. Her breath would hitch as she finished each rune, then would lick her lips and tilt her head as she wondered at her work.

"And you told me that you would never let me go, that this was all you ever wanted." (Y/N) took in a sharp breath before she continued, "The last thing you said to me that night was that for the first time in your life you wanted to live." She told him, reaching a shaking hand to his cheeks.

Jace let out a breath- that neither one of them knew he was holding- of relief as he heard her finish. He then threw himself at her, his body weight leaning against hers. For the first time in a week Jace felt safe, his arms wrapped around her.

Jace turned his head so this lips brushed hers, pushing against her lips. He knew more than ever that it was her, it tasted like her - peaches and clean laundry - and it felt like her.

(Y/N) lost her arms around him, holding up his weight as his lips came crashing down on hers. She was glad she hadn't brought anyone know, not that they were a shy couple, and that no one had seen them kissing so desperately. This was the first time she had felt him in about a week, it was like coming up for fresh air after drowning.

She was the first to break away, pushing Jace away with her hands gripping the ripped material of his shirt. Both of them breathed heavily, feeling their lips burning at the lack of contact.

"We've got to go." (Y/N) said quietly, her eyes flickering back to his lips. She shook her head at the idea of diving back into him, "We've really got to go Jace."

He swallowed, nodding in agreement before rising to his feet. Jace stretched out, reaching his hands above his head before looking back at (Y/N) with a smile. "Let's do this." Jace said, his face back to the same solider he usually was.

(Y/N) handed him a seraph blade, her fingers brushing his. "Ready?" She asked him, her hand resting on the door handle.

Jace called the name of the blade, smirking down at it. He looked back up at his girlfriend, confidence radiating off of him.

She turned the handle, prepared to dive into a sea of demon.
