Picture of little Elsie above 🥰

It had been three days since mum had the op. She was back in the ward from the beginning along with the same three women who had all had similar surgery to her.

Me and my dad were sharing visiting time around his work and my aunty was calling over to the hospital everyday to check that her sister was doing well. It helped for me to have a small break away to collect myself and have time to think. It sounds awful but at times, I just needed to be away from it all.

I haven't really seen much of Dr. Ross except for the evening visits he would do at around 7:00pm. Neither of us had mentioned the hug but I could feel a tension growing between us. I thought we were ok as he seemed to shrug it off but he's been different since then. I can't quite put my finger on it but something felt weird.

It was now nearing twelve and I knew it wouldn't be long before I was asked to leave for the patients to have their lunch.

As per the last two days, I had been reading to the patients. They were now more alert and aware of everything going on around them and were enjoying listening to the cheesy romance novel my mother had packed in her weekend bag.

After walking my mother back from the toilet I settled back into the chair next to the bed and picked up the book once again. I smiled at the book mark I was given by a child in my class. It brought back such amazing memories of enjoying teaching little darlings and the things they would come out with.

Before I could let myself depress over the fact that I gave my job up to be there for my family, I found my place in the book and asked all the patients if they were ready.

"Yes, go on love." Dianna answered from the bed furthest away. She was the smallest lady I had ever seen. Her frame was tiny and her whole demeanour was kind and loving.

"Ok, get comfy then ladies." I smiled at each one in turn before returning to my page.

"Charlotte couldn't help but stare at the beautiful man across the table. His brown eyes stared into her green. She was trying hard to calm the nerves growing inside her. What was she supposed to say to such an intimidating man? Everything about him screamed power and she was just a shy little woman who enjoyed blending into the background."

My mother stopped my reading with a weak little laugh. I looked at her from the corner of my eye and she held her hand up slowly. "Sorry, I just thought she reminded me of someone."

I glared at her. She might be recovering from major surgery but the comments on my way of life weren't necessary.

"I'm nothing like Charlotte. I can be stern when I want to be and I might not be the bravest but who cares?" She just smiles in the direction of the door and says nothing.

I can't help the childish humph that escapes my mouth before I continue with the chapter.

"Aaron looked back at the beauty across from him and knew she was finding it hard to read him but that was half of the fun. He brushed his fingers over the top of her knuckles and chuckled low to himself. This woman had no idea what she did to him and yet he never told her."

I heard a cough from the door and turned my body to see Dr. Ross standing there with the biggest smile I'd seen him make. Was he laughing at me? How dare he!

"As lovely as your romance novel is for these ladies, they're in need of a check up and their food. Would you mind coming back in two hours please Miss Daniels?" He's still laughing at me and it's actually infuriating. Why is he making me so angry? I'm not an angry person!

"Thank you Dr. Ross. I'm sorry if some of us help lift patient moral with long visits and real interaction. I will be in the coffee shop mum. Be sure to eat all your food now ok?" I look directly into his eyes and both his eyebrows lift in shock and his laughing stopped. Good! Why does everyone think I'm this pathetic person who has no means of a backbone?
