"Mum, honestly, I'm ok. I just forgot I wore these clothes to see you yesterday." I'd spent the day with Elsie playing in Adams office and around the hospital. It was just after two so it was visiting time to see my mum after she had her lunch. To say she was intuitive would be an understatement.
"Do you take me for a fool? I've raised you. I know you don't wear the same outfit two days in a row unless there was probable cause. What's the the real reason Sophia?"
She's smiling at me like she already knows I spent the night at Adams. It wasn't anything untoward though. It was merely him looking out for me as I had a concussion, while we cuddled together because of a lonely four year old.
My mind drifts to Adam sitting in his office with a sleeping Elsie. I'd just got her off for a nap when he came in and said he was on lunch. Well timed wasn't he?
"Mum honestly, nothing happened. I just went to visit a friend and forgot a change of clothes." It wasn't a direct lie.
She raised her eyebrow at me and smiles a very knowing smile. She was onto me. It was good to see her back to her old ways. I loved this side of my mother. As much as I hated her nosiness, it showed how much she knew me.
"So, what friend?"
Here she goes. The usual interrogation where she normally cracks me. What would she think of me staying at her doctors house? Let alone the potential date we might have.
"Just someone I'm helping out who's going through a lot at the moment. To be fair, it's helping to take my mind off everything we've been going through."
My smile is shy and I know it but it's so hard to not blab everything to my mum. I'd love to know her thoughts on the whole thing but I don't want to speak too soon. Plus there are three other very nosy women on this ward.
Before she can respond with her clever comments, my heart starts to beat a thousand miles per minute at the feeling of his presence.
Holy Hell, he should be with Elsie!
I don't even have to look up to know it's him. My body has become hotter and my nerves are on edge. He sets the butterflies loose in my stomach and I'm already blushing even though he's not said anything.
"Mrs Daniels, would you mind ever so much if I borrowed Sophia for a moment?" He looks directly at my mother and not at me. What's happened? I can't help but feel somethings wrong.
"Sure, is everything ok Dr. Ross? Could you not say it in front of me?" She smiles a Cheshire Cat smile and I know exactly what she's doing. She's trying to see if her suspicions are accurate.
"All is fine. I just have someone that would like to see Sophia very quickly."
My mums face was a picture. She was so confused. She obviously guessed that something was happening between Adam and I but the other person was a complete mystery to her.
I on the other hand was betting that as soon as I walked through those doors, Elsie would tackle me.
"I'll be two minutes Mum."
When I opened the doors, I don't even get a chance to look around before I feel two arms encircle my legs. I look at Adam and see his concerned face and I already know what he's worried about. She's getting very attached to me.
"Is...everything ok?" I'm afraid of the answer and I don't want him to tell me to back off either. Even though I know I probably should. She needs me right now though and I need her.
"She just likes you so much. It's a little concerning I suppose. She woke up and thought you left and was panicking she'd never see you again."
"Ah...and you're worried because you don't know how long I'm going to stick around. Especially with my mum leaving the hospital in a few days." I say it so that he doesn't have to.
