Seventeen | The Hidden Meanings Explained

There are some things that are purposely hidden within the story that is never addressed because of the mere fact that it is predominantly in Eun Mi's perspective. She only sees things and perceive things the way that she does. Other characters see things differently than she does and may act differently than her.

I've written this part just in case you didn't catch on to the little details in the story that puts things into a full perspective, including things such as actions of other characters, facial expressions, and why some things are said by certain characters. There are also many hidden things in the story that I'm not sure if everyone picked up on that, and it's incredibly important.

1) Chapter 1 Turning the Corner: In the beginning chapter, Eun Mi is eating spicy ramen before she is instructed by her members to go buy ice cream. "I shut the freezer door before turning the aisle to go pay. I almost bumped into someone and apologized. 'Sor-' I bowed before looking up at the person. '-ry.' I mumbled as I recognized him. He looked at me and bowed his head slightly before moving out the way. 'Eun Mi.' Mark simply said as he motioned for me to walk by."

This is a parallel and nod to the first time that they met. Eun Mi recalls her first impression of Mark in chapter fourteen. "I don't know what happened, but I remember falling down after bumping into you. I think we were both turning a corner." I said as he listened attentively. "You bowed to apologize without even looking at me and when you stood back up, you froze midway of saying sorry." I laughed as I recalled.

However, in the first chapter where they meet for the first time in ages, Eun Mi is now the one to say sorry without looking at who it is. The first time they met when they were trainees, it was Mark who did this instead. It is a metaphor for their beginnings.

2) Chapter 2 Mystery Noise: In this chapter, Eun Mi leaves Mark at the cafe after she sees a text message from Koeun (ex SM trainee). He follows Eun Mi up to the training rooms where they are talking outside in the main hallway. When they are discussing why Mark thinks she is mad (She is honest when she says that she isn't mad. She is more annoyed that he stopped any contact with her, but still talked to other trainees. Despite this, Mark thinks she is mad so he keeps asking why she is mad. He doesn't like the idea of her being mad at him.), Mark grabs her wrist. In that moment, she hears something down the hall, and when she looks, there is no one there.

The truth was that it was a NCT member walked out and saw them. After Mark and Eun Mi signed the contact, they were told that their group members would come in after them. The time they were in the cafe was long enough for the members to finish discussing the contract and head back to the training rooms.

It was Jaehyun who walked out and retreated back into the training room the moment he heard Mark say," You can tell me. We were once really close friends." Jaehyun saw Mark holding Eun Mi's wrist and basically yeeted out of there without being seen. He didn't want to interrupt them.
