"The wedding is today," Laura said, shaking me awake.
I blinked a few times, letting my eyes focus. "What time is it?" I asked.
"5:30" Laura replied.
I pushed her away. "Laura. Please tell me you're lying. The wedding starts at 4 in the evening! Why would you wake me up???"
Laura shrugged and left my field of vision. I heard the bathroom door shut as she went in it. Whatever. I rolled over so I could get at least a little more sleep before she came back to wake me up for real. My eyes opened a crack and I realized John wasn't there. I looked around the hotel room and realized he wasn't in it.
"Laura!" I called sleepily.
"Hm?" She yelled from the other room.
"Where's John?" I asked.
John poked his head out from another room. "I'm here." He pointed out at the door he had just walked from. "Did you know we have a whole other room in this hotel room? We have a kitchen."
I sat up and blinked. "Why are you poking around the hotel room at 5:30 in the morning?" I asked, squinting at him.
"Laura woke me up like thirty minutes ago." John explained. "She tried to get you too, but you wouldn't wake up."
Yeah, that sounded about right.
"We have a kitchen in the hotel room." John repeated.
I looked at the door. "I thought that door was just for decoration."
"We all did."
I flopped back onto the bed, rubbing my eyes. "What the fuck, y'all it's so earlyyyy."
John laughed and sat on the bed next to me. "You're not a morning person?"
"You are?"
John shrugged. He shifted so he was sitting completely on the bed.
I pinched the bridge of my nose. John looked down at me and chuckled.
"What?" I asked.
"It's not important, it's just, your hair is really messed up. You look funny." John said, laughing a little louder now.
I smacked him playfully as best I could from my position lying down. "Stooop, I'm tired, I can't help it."
John leaned over and kissed my forehead. "I know. It's not that bad."
I blushed and rolled over. "I'm going back to bed." I announced.
"Okay."
Everything was quiet before a knock rang out from the bathroom. "Are you guys still being gay, or can I come out?"
I sighed. John snorted from next to me. "You're good," He called to Laura.
She came out of the bathroom. "Y'all want me to get breakfast? I can go to the McDonald's near here."
"You know we have a kitchen, right?" Asked John.
"You want to cook?" Laura asked pointedly.
"Not really."
"I'll get McDonald's."
"Get me an iced coffee." I said, my voice muffled by the pillow.
"Okay. What do you want?" She asked John. I tuned out of the conversation and focused on going back to sleep.
I heard the door shut behind Laura as she left the hotel room, and rolled back over to face John. He was looking out the window and didn't notice I had turned around. I scooted closer to him and put my head on his lap.
He jumped but looked down and smiled. "Hey."
"Hey." I smiled back.
"What's up?" He asked.
"You're my new pillow."
"I see that."
"Do you think she'll remember my iced coffee?"
John laughed and rolled his eyes. "Way to ruin a moment."
"Sorry, I wasn't sure what to do. But do you think she will?" I asked.
"I'm sure she won't forget." He assured me.
"So..." I said.
"So."
We looked at each other for a second. He chewed on his lip slightly before he spoke. "Do you think you're ready for the wedding?"
"Now who's ruining the moment?" I asked.
"Charlie-"
"Sorry, sorry..." I thought about it. "Yeah, I do, actually. I thought it would be weirder than it actually is. I guess that's what I wanted though. Plus, I already know I'm better than them. I'm showing up with a famous person on my arm! Jamie knows I've already beat him."
John squinted at me. "Beat him?"
It took me a second before what I had said clicked in my head. I sat straight up and grabbed John's shoulders. "That's not what I meant! I mean, like, James's boyfriend is a lying, cheating dumbass, and mine is a super sweet, funny guy. The famous thing doesn't matter to me, you know that! I'm just saying, it matters to some people, a lot of members of my family included."
John frowned. "Right, yeah. Of course."
I sighed. "John, look. I said the wrong thing. I don't care about your fame, or whatever. I like you. I like your smile, and I like how dumb and basic you are, and I even like your dumb jokes."
John looked at me, a smile slowly spreading across his face and his eyes sparkling. "It wasn't that bad, Charlie. You don't have to get all dramatic."
I spluttered, and he kissed my cheek. "I know you, don't worry babe. You're bad with words, I get it."
"John, you almost gave me a heart attack!"
John smiled at me and my heart skipped a beat. "You'll live, I'm sure. If you don't, I'll be at your funeral."
"You'd better!" I gave him a quick kiss, laughing.
Laura got there about ten minutes later, and the three of us chilled in the hotel room until we had to get ready for the wedding. I was basically done when my phone started ringing. I picked it up. It was James??? Okay. I answered.
"Charles!!! Is this you?" Jamie's panicked voice came through the phone.
"Yeah! Yeah. Um.. we're getting ready now. What's up?" I asked cautiously.
"I'm freaking out right now! I didn't know who to call. Can you come over, like, right now?"
His voice worried me. "Yeah, I'll be right over. Are you okay?" I asked, gathering my things as quick as I could.
"I don't want to talk about it over the phone. Just, please." He pleaded.
"Okay, yes. Okay. I'm about to call an Uber, I'll be there as soon as I can. Hang on."
"Thanks." James hung up.
"What happened?" Laura asked, sticking her head out of the bathroom where she was busy getting ready.
"James is freaking out. Pre-wedding stuff, I guess."
Laura nodded in understanding. She pointed at the nightstand. "Just take the rental. We'll get an Uber."
"Oh, okay. Thanks." I said, grabbing the keys. "See ya, guys."
Laura waved. John called something from the room, but he was brushing his teeth, so I couldn't understand.
I walked out the door as quickly as I could without rushing. I guess I was going to see my brother.
