James dropped us off at our hotel. There was one room. Laura left soon after we got there to go get a rental car, and it was just me and John in the room. I sat next to him on the bed.
"Thanks, again for helping me." I said. "I know this probably isn't your idea of a fun weekend."
John smiled at me. "It's cool. From what I've heard about James, he sucks. Plus, I like spending time with you." He blushed, thinking about what he had just said. "Sorry." He said.
That 'sorry' made my heart hurt a little bit.
"Don't be!" I said quickly. "Actually, I've been meaning to talk to you about that!"
He looked at his feet. "We don't have to." He said. "Honestly, i'd rather not."
"No! John, the thing is..." I almost stopped, but quickly composed myself. He needed to know. "The thing is, I don't not feel the same way about you, the way you feel about me, I mean I think so."
John looked at me. "What?" He asked. "I don't know what that means."
"John, I-"
"GUYS!" Laura said, bursting through the door. "I got us a Chevy Camaro!!! And it's a convertible!"
We looked at her. She looked back at us. "Am I interrupting something."
"I think?" Said John.
I cleared my throat and stood up. "Nah, It's all good. What color is it?"
"Light blue! We are going to look so hot riding down the street!"
I smiled. "Oh, and before I forget, the bachelor parties are tonight. John and I are going to James's, and you, Charlie, are going to Thomas's." She gave me an apologetic look. "Sorry, I'd switch with you if I could."
I nodded. "Yeah."
We had snack of some popcorn from the mini fridge, and then we all got up and started to get ready. I didn't know where James was having his party, but Thomas's party was at a restaurant. It was me and a couple other guys, including Thomas, of course, sitting around a table having steak and potatoes and beer. I did not have beer. Best to stay on my feet around the enemy.
I did my best to act like I was having fun for the sake of being polite, but I didn't know these people. And if I did, I hadn't talked to them for years.
Thomas leaned over to me. "This is fun, right?" He asked. "I'm so glad you could make it."
I smiled politely at him. "Yes. Although I am confused why i'm here and not, you know, with my brother."
Thomas laughed. "Well, we each wanted you at out parties, but he gave in when I offered to give him Laura and John Mulaney."
"You know the way you worded that sounds weird, right?"
"Oh." He laughed. "I guess. I just meant that since there are two bachelor parties and we have some of the same friends, we had to sit down and decide who would come to which party."
"Alright."
I thought that was the end of the conversation, so I took a bite of my potatoes, but THomas kept talking.
"So, tell me about John. Seriously, how did you guys end up together? He's so..."
"What?" I asked.
"He's really soft. I just don't think he's your type at all. You're a country boy! You're strong (even though you don't look like it), and quiet, and he's like... loud and weak. I never thought you of all people would end up with a comedian. You're better than that, Charlie" He said, laughing.
