I watched, chin resting on my hand, as the happy couple did their first dance. They looked very sweet together. My brother looked at me from across the room and grinned. I felt a smile spreading across my own face, and gave him a goofy thumbs up.

Still smiling, I looked at John, who was sitting next to me. He looked at me carefully. "So everything between you two is good now?" He whispered so my family couldn't hear.

I nodded. "Yeah, i''m pretty sure everything is fine now. Which is a relief. Being mad was exhausting."

We joined in clapping as James finished his dance, and people started to mill on the dance floor for more slow dancing. I looked at John an shrugged. "I don't suppose you want to dance."

John looked at me for a moment before smiling. "Sure," He said. "Why the hell not?"

We made our way to the dance floor where other couples were slow dancing. We took our positions and started to sway to the music, as you do.

"I'm kind of glad we got away from your family. Not that I don't like them! The're very nice. Just kind of..."

"Nosy?" I finished for him.

He nodded slightly, and I laughed. "Yeah, they can be like that. They mean well though."

John smiled at me. "Hey, I forgot to say it earlier, but you look really nice tonight."

It was so out of left field that I couldn't stop the blush that rose to my cheeks, and I put my head down. "Thanks!" I said, way too overenthusiastically. I looked back up at him. "I mean, thank you." That sounded better. "You look really good too."

"Thanks." He said.

He kept dancing, although John wasn't actually the best at it.

"You know," He said after a while. "I don't think I've been completely transparent with you tonight."

I raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?" Despite how calm I sounded on the outside, my heart started to pick up it's pace.

"Well, I was talking to your parents earlier, and they were asking me all these questions." John said.

"Right."

"And like, I was telling them things I haven't even told you yet," He said.

I interrupted. "I was listening. You didn't exactly spill the most juicy secrets."

"Babe, we all knew you were listening."

"You knew I was listening???" I asked.

"Of course! Why else would you be talking to your first cousin Gene? He's insufferable!"

I looked at him, raising my eyebrows and smiling. "You studied up on my family?"

John blushed a bit. "Laura helped me. That's not important! I knew you were listening, so I got flustered and gave a cheap answer. I mean, yeah, I think you're cute, of course, and I did think you hated me, but that's not my favorite thing about you. I-"

"Stop." I said, covering his mouth.

"Too much? Sorry," He said, his voice muffled by my hand. He pushed my hand away, looking upset.

"No! That's not what I meant." I said, realizing the result of my actions. "I just meant. Stop."

"Yeah, I heard that part." John said.

"I feel like..." I hesitated, but forged on. "I feel like you make all the moves. I always end up saying the wrong thing, like... Just now." I sighed. "I want to say the nice thing first."

John blinked. "Okay, go ahead."

"You're super funny, and extremely handsome." I said, fanning myself with my hand jokingly. "If that isn't enough, you're super sweet, and smart, and optimistic, and you're a very supportive person. I don't know what to say now, and this isn't going anywhere, I just wanted to get that out there. I like you, a lot. I'm happy you agreed to come here with me."

Neither of us said anything until John started laughing. "Me too." He said.

I kissed his cheek and smiled at him. "That's good to hear."

The song ended, and a more upbeat song came on.

"It's the chicken dance." John said. "I'm out."

"Right behind you," I added, following him off the dance floor and back to our table. No one was there, as they were all busy doing the chicken dance, and we chatted and ate our food for a while.

Someone sat down across the table from us. "Hey, sorry," I said, distracted by my food and not looking at the person. "Someone's sitting ther- Oh! Laura, hey!"

"You guys are lucky!" Laura exclaimed from the seat across me. "Your seats are so close to the groom's table and the dance floor!"

"That's what happens when you're part of the immediate family." I said, picking at my green beans with my fork.

"Yeah, whatever. Have you losers just been sitting here the whole time?" Laura looked at her nails, which had gotten a manicure the day before. I rolled my eyes when I saw that most of the polish had been picked off.

"It's only been three songs," I reminded her. "And we actually did dance earlier, and we got up to get food with everyone else."

"You two did the chicken dance together?" Laura laughed.

I squinted at her, trying to channel all my '????bitch?????????' energy into the expression.

John cleared his throat. "So, we didn't chicken dance, because we still have shreds of dignity, but-" He started, but Laura interrupted him.

"So y'all slow danced? Ooh, romantic."

John smiled coolly. "Speaking of romantic..."

"Oh yeah! How are things with Margaret?" I asked, making a dumb face at Laura.

She blushed. "We were actually seated right next to each other!"

"That's great!"

Soon after, most of my family stopped dancing for a while, so Laura had to leave. The rest of the wedding went off without a problem. We got back to the hotel room really late because it was a while away from the reception area. Laura collapsed starfished on one bed, so John and I ended up on the other.

"So," John said, "What'd you think?"

I stared at the ceiling, too tired to move, even just to roll over and face him. "It was cool. Wish it had been closer and ended earlier though. I'll be glad when we can go back to New York, though. Texas is okay, but I miss having a Starbucks right around the corner."

John laughed from beside me, then hummed. "I guess I agree."
