We looked at each other for a second before I coughed and looked away. "Laura just texted," I said, pulling out my phone. "She's here, just got her ticket."

Right on cue, Laura sat down on the other side of John. "Hey," I said, looking past John at her. "How was your date?"

She smiled. "It went well, thanks! How was yours?"

"What are you talking about? I didn't-" Oh. Ohhhh. I swallowed and finished my sentence. "I didn't go on a date, I was with John the whole time."

Laura looked at us and raised her eyebrows. "Right, my mistake." She said, leaning back in her seat at the movie actually started. "Oh, I got here in just the nick of time!"

We all watched the movie. Occasionally Laura would make comments about the movie and John and I would laugh. It was fun. At the end of the night, John gave me his phone number, so I figured that meant that we were friends now.

After that, we started texting each other. That was cool. I wasn't much of a texter, but John texted a lot, or maybe it was just a lot for me because I don't text a lot. One day about half a week later, I was making waffles and bacon when my phone buzzed. I picked it up and saw it was him.

From John: Hey are you busy tonight?

To John: No, why?

From John: I'm not doing anything tonight, and I was wondering if you wanted to hand out?

From John: Hang out*

To John: Sure... I get out of work at 5.

From John: Alright I'll pick you up from work???

I sent him the address and continued my breakfast. Then my phone buzzed again.

From John: Wear a coat, I'm not giving you mine this time!!

To John: Where are you taking me?

From John: It's a surprise!

From John: Laura suggested it!

To John: Okay.

I set my phone down to eat my breakfast, before getting out the door and to work.

Work was okay. Nothing new. During lunch, I talked to my work acquaintance, Sherri. Sherri asked if I wanted to go for a drink with her and some others after. I said no, I was busy. This prompted her to ask why. I didn't want to tell her, so I walked away and sat near Phillip for lunch, even though he eats stinky tuna fish sandwiches, because Phillip doesn't talk.

Sherri never takes anything personally though, and she walked out with me at the end of the day. "Sooo, are you busy doing something alone, or is there somebody involved?" She asked, giving me a smile that reminded me all too much of Laura as we stepped off the elevator.

"Sherri, I keep my work life and personal life separate for a reason. I don't want to talk about it." I said, pushing open the door that led into the lobby. John was sitting in a chair in the lobby, tapping his foot and waiting. I left Sherri and went over to him. "Hey," I said.

He stood up. "Did you bring a coat?" He asked.

I looked down at the coat I was wearing and then back at him. "Yes."

"Okay," He said, walking out the door. "Let's go!"

Sherri gave me a thumbs up as I followed him, which I pointedly ignored.

We got in the car. "So where are you taking me?" I asked.

"We're going ice skating! Laura said you were great at it!"
