"I've gotta say, Margaret," I said, taking a sip of my iced coffee. "When you called this morning and said you were coming to New York, I thought you meant in like a month or something."
"I know, sorry!" Margaret said. "I wanted to surprise Laura, and you can't keep a secret for the life of you." She laughed. "I'm so excited to finally see her again! Do you think she'll be surprised? John said she would."
I raised my eyebrows and turned to John, who was next to me. "You knew?!"
He shrugged and had the good grace to look sheepish. "Sorry babe, you're just... a really, really horrible liar."
"Whatever." I turned my attention back to Margaret, trying not to look too hurt. "So she doesn't know you're here yet?"
"Nope."
"When are you going to see her?" I asked.
John's phone lit up with a text. "She's almost here." He said.
Margaret nodded quickly. "Do I look okay?" She asked. "I just want this to go well."
"You look fine," I assured her. "I'm sure she-"
"MARGARET!"
I was interrupted by Laura, who ran past me and engulfed her girlfriend in a huge hug. "Maggie, why are you- What are you doing in New York?"
"I missed you! I just had to come to see you!" Margaret laughed. "John said you don't have work this week."
Laura beamed, looking at us. "Aww," she said. "So that's why John was asking me about my schedule! Y'all are too sweet."
I coughed. "I didn't do anything."
"Makes sense," Laura mused. "You can't keep a secret to save your life." She giggled and turned her attention back to Margaret.
I crossed my arms and leaned back in my chair. John nudged me.
"Hey, Charlie," he said. "You're not too mad we left you out of the plans, right? Maggie really wanted it to be a surprise."
I rolled my eyes. "It's fine," I said. "You're lucky I like surprises too."
John smiled. "You're the best."
"I know."
We both looked at Margaret and Laura, who were talking quietly.
"Should we... let them talk?" John asked.
"I know a decent sushi place near here."
"Alright."
We said goodbye to the girls, who barely waved at us and went right back to talking as we left the coffee shop.
We talked while we were walking, but John looked deep in thought.
I cleared my throat. "What's up?" I asked him.
He startled. "Oh! Sorry. I'm just thinking. Are you sure you're not mad?"
I sighed, stopping in my tracks. "I literally just said I wasn't when we were in the coffee shop. If I'm that bad a liar, you would have known I was telling the truth. I'm fine." Someone gave me a dirty look as they walked past me. Maybe stopping in the middle of a busy sidewalk wasn't a good idea?
"See, but that right there, what you just said, makes me think the opposite."
"You're right, sorry," I said. "But I'm serious. It's not that deep." I motioned to the street in front of us. "It's just one more block." I started walking again.
"Right," John said, jogging to catch up with me. "You know, for a short person, you walk incredibly fast."
"I'm not that short," I said. "Shut up."
He laughed. "My bad."
We arrived. Technically, It wasn't a sushi shop so much as a Japanese restaurant, but they did sell sushi. We got our food and ended up walking to a park nearby and sitting on a bench to eat.
I started talking about something that happened at work, and he listened. We sat there for about 15 minutes like that. "Yeah so anyway," I finished, "He got fired. Which is kind of ironic, because he started a fire. But I'm not that upset to see him go honestly, he was kind of a dick."
John leaned over and kissed my cheek.
I laughed. "What was that for? I'm just talking about Dave." I asked.
"Just because I love you."
My brain froze. He had never sad that before. This was a first. Something we would always remember, and... I groaned. "Did you have to say that for the first time while I was talking about Dave the pyromaniac?" I asked. Tactful as always, Charlie. But really, Dave?
John laughed awkwardly. "Probably not the best time, no."
I suppose my brain rebooted because just then I realized what he had said. "Oh! Shit!" I said, very loudly. A mom who had brought her kid to the park made a face at me. I ignored her. "Me too!"
"What?"
"Me-" I stopped myself and took a breath before I said anything else so that I could maybe prevent myself from saying anything else dumb. "I love you too."
John smiled. "I love you too," He said.
"You already said that," I reminded him, in case he forgot.
"I know."
I rolled my eyes. "I love you too, nerd." I kissed him.
