"Welcome to Sally's candy shop! What'll it be?" A little boy chirped as he stood on his tiptoes on the short stool to see over the counter.
Annabeth scrunched her face up and glared.
"Aren't you a little young to be working?" She spat.
"No! I'm just as old as you! And my mom said I could so there!" The boy shot back.
"Percy? Percy is there a customer here?" A woman's voice called from the back.
"It's okay mom! I got it!" Percy yelled. "Now are you gonna buy some candy or what?" Percy snapped at the little girl.
Annabeth huffed, turning her head away so fast her little pony tail nearly hit her in the face.
"If you don't buy some candy I'm gonna call the cops on you!" Percy shouted.
"Percy, be nice!" Sally yelled from the back.
Annabeth felt her heart skip beats. She couldn't go to jail, she was only six years old! Could this kid really call the cops? He was working, and he even had a little apron just like the nice lady who usually came out instead. She didn't know for sure, but she wasn't about to take any chance. Dad said if she caused any trouble while they were visiting in New York he'd mail her back home, and since the post office was super boring, she couldn't let that happen.
"Fine!" Annabeth yelled.
She stalked the tall shelves, eyeing the rainbow of candy jars she could pick from until she settled on some red Swedish fish.
"I want that!" she snapped pointing to the jar.
Percy looked over, and rolled his eyes with a scoff.
"The blueberry gumballs are better," Percy huffed.
"What? Why?" said Annabeth.
"'Cause they're blue, and blue is the best color so it makes everything taste better," Percy said like it was common logic.
"Blue is just a color! It doesn't even have a taste!"
"Yes it does! Blue tastes like blueberry, that's why they call it bluuuue berry! Because the berry tastes blue," Percy snapped.
Annabeth's jaw dropped.
"You're stupid!" she snapped.
"No, you're stupid!"
"No you!"
"Percy!" Sally yelled as she marched out. "What on earth are you yelling about?"
"She called me stupid!" Percy yelled.
"He called me stupid first!" Annabeth yelled.
"Percy don't call our customers mean things," Sally said sternly.
"But-" Percy started.
"Percy, if you can't follow the rules, you won't be allowed to help in the shop anymore."
Percy got a glum look as he fidgeted with the back strings on his apron.
"Okay Mom," Percy mumbled.
Sally smiled and messed up his hair.
"Good boy."
She crouched down to meet Annabeth at eye level.
"Now what would you like, Miss?" She said with a smile.
"I want the Swedish fish, please." Annabeth said pointing up.
"Sure thing sweetie. Let me get you a bag and-"
"I wanna get it!" Percy huffed.
"Percy, this jar is up too high for you to reach."
