She picks up the bucket of candy where she left it on the table by the door and flips the lock. Just before she opens the door she checks to make sure she doesn't have any crumbs on her costume and puts on a smile for the trick-or-treater.
Groups of kids have been showing up at her apartment for most of the night but normally there's three or four and at least one adult. It's not that this is the worst neighborhood but it's still better to be safe than sorry. So when she opens the door and finds a little girl in a greek chiton she's a little taken aback.
"Trick-or-treat!" The girl says and gives her a toothy grin.
"Hi," Annabeth squats down, "who are you?"
"Eirene," the little girls says simply.
"Eirene, the Greek goddess of peace?" Annabeth raises and eyebrow and scans the girl's costume again.
Tucked into her belt are a cornucopia and a scepter. Annabeth has to give the girl credit for accuracy.
"Yep," the girl shakes her bag impatiently.
"Well then, Eirene, here you go." Annabeth grabs a handful of candy and drops it into the little girl's bag.
"That's a lot of candy" Little Eirene's eyes go wide and Annabeth can practically see the looming sugar rush.
"Well, I wouldn't want to displease the goddess of peace would I?" Annabeth smiles and grabs another candy bar from the bucket. "Put in a good word for Athens will you," she says and drops the extra treat into the bag.
"Thanks! I like Athens, they're cool." Little Eirene shakes her bag and examines her haul.
"I think so too." The lack of supervision for the little girl nags at Annabeth.
"Who are you supposed to be?" She says and lift's her eyes to Annabeth's.
"Black Canary," Annabeth says putting her fist on her waist to look dramatic and the little girl giggles.
"She's a superhero right?" Annabeth nods to the little girl.
"Yep, an awesome superhero that's smart and strong." Annabeth says with pride. "Can I ask what your name is?"
"It's Hannah," she says and reaches a hand into her bag of candy.
"Well, Hannah, can I ask why you're out trick-or-treating alone?" Annabeth eyes her own candy.
"I'm not alone, my big brother is with me, he's just slow and keeps getting stopped by all the weird old ladies." Hannah pulls out a Kit Kat and peels it open.
"Weird old ladies?" Annabeth raises an eyebrow.
"Yeah, her name is Morine." Hannah says with a mouth full of candy bar.
"Ah, Mrs. O'Houlihan, she's a bit strange." Annabeth peers around the door frame but the apartment doors are set back into the wall and she can't see anything. "Well how about you hang out here with me until your brother catches up okay?"
"Yeah, you're really pretty." Hannah says straight faced and digs for another candy bar.
"Thanks," Annabeth says a bit bashfully. "What's your brother dressed up as?"
"He's the same thing he is every year, Aquaman." This time Hannah fishes a Reeses Cup from the bag.
"Hey, I'll trade you for that." Annabeth points at the candy Hannah's holding.
Hannah eyes the candy then the bucket Annabeth is still holding like she's weighing her options. She reaches her hand back into the bag and pushes the candy around a little before nodding to herself.
