Library Card

On a late summer afternoon, New York City perspired under a record-breaking heat wave. However, the activity of the city was left unchanged by the scorching weather: the streets were still bustling with tourists, and a few stopping under the occasional tree or entering the nearest building, hoping for some fresh air in the shade.

Unfortunately, Percy Jackson happened to be working at the public library at that moment, suffocating due to the malfunction of the air conditioning. He had spent the whole day sorting books and serving clients. He was hoping taking extra hours would help Annabeth and he to pay their apartment's rent, since they were really short of money this month.

Motivated by this throughout his shift, Percy spent hours arranging books in their shelves. Occasionally, he would stop between alleys and near the wall to get as much fresh air as he could from the vents. More often than he would like to admit, he lost himself in thought and daydreamed of peeling off his sticky shirt and taking a shower.

Finally, the sun slowly disappeared behind the skyscrapers of the city. After hours of wiping his moist palms on his Bermuda shorts, Percy noticed it was getting dark. He took a chance and looked over the counter at the clock, then breathed out, relieved. It was 8:40 pm, which meant he could leave in about twenty minutes.

Percy was dying of exhaustion. He was drumming his fingers on the counter, impatient to leave work and join his amazing girlfriend home. By 8:50, there was barely anyone left in the library. As Percy bent down to pick up his stuff, he was alerted of someone else's presence by a marked cough.

"Excuse me, sir? I don't have a library card, but do you mind if I check you out?" a far-too-familliar voice asked him seductively.

Had it been anybody else, Percy would have been quite astonished. But he knew that voice, and so he played the game. "Excuse me?" he asked, faking surprise. "I'm pretty sure it would be considered inappropriate for me to try and flirt with the clients, Miss Chase," he said with a smirk.

"What about customer service?" the lady inquired smugly, her blonde curls bouncing as she tilted her head in mock puzzlement. "You wouldn't want me to report you to file a claim against you, would you?"

Percy gasped dramatically. "You wouldn't dare!"

"Try me."

The two stared at each other intensely. Then, they burst out laughing.

It took both young adults a few moments to calm down. Once the chuckles died out, Percy caught his breath and said to the woman, "Come here."

He gently pulled on her wrist and kissed her, while she returned the kiss affectionately. Their bodies melted together with familiarity, the young woman's arms resting on Percy's shoulders while his were settling around her waist.

Percy pulled away from the lady, while still not letting go. "What are you doing here, Annabeth?" he asked curiously. "Aren't you supposed to be at work?" Percy knew that she'd been extra busy with her internship and usually came home even later than he did.

"The boss dismissed us early. He knew most of us have been working lots of overtimes this week. Finally, he showed some mercy. He had to. We're all so tired!" Annabeth finished, throwing her hands up.

Percy chuckled, amused by his girlfriend's theatrical manner.

"I'm closing the library in about five minutes. Maybe after that we could go grab something to eat?"

"Yes, I'm starving," Annabeth replied.

Percy smiled, the hard labour of the day now being nothing but a distant memory. Indeed, as much as he complained about the hot weather, he would always appreciate the way his heart warmed up whenever Annabeth was around. And so, five minutes later, they left the library, hand in hand.

Hello guys! It has been ages since I wrote. I swear I had to read a few of the oneshots to get back into the road. And you guys left so many comments and votes.  I'm truly amazed that this collection is still going around.

I've actually been going back to the Harry Potter fandom. One of the main reasons is because I found a new otp which is Dramione (Draco Malfoy and Hermione Granger). I have about two weeks of school left which is very exciting so I might actually reread the series! And I hope I can also reread PJO again because why the heck not?

I would like to apologize for not updating for a long time. Are you ready for the lamest excuse ever? Ready? Okay: I have been very busy with school. Especially since my finals is coming up. It's the truth.  I also have been trying to feel okay recently. I've been quite stressed with school and a bunch of other things that you guys probably won't care about.

Anyways, enough with my blabbering, here's another one! I hope you guys liked it and I will try my best to update more!
