The whole circle, plus Blackwell, was at the abandoned house. Cassie, Diana, and Faye told us what they saw and Jake and I told them what we found. I couldn't believe it.
My best friend was alive.
"There's no way you saw Nick." Melissa dismisses them. "He's dead."
"It was Nick." Jake spoke. He sat on a different couch than me. After Cassie and the others told us what happened, he immediately distanced himself from me. "He even has a picture of our parents." He said.
"This is impossible. Even for our standards." Adam spoke.
"Maybe not." Blackwell tells us. "It's possible that when Nick drowned, the demon didn't and kept his body alive."
"Looks like our insane standards just got a lot insaner." Faye says.
"The point is, Nick is alive." Melissa stands to her feet.
"He's not the same Nick we know." Cassie said.
"You didn't even know him." I state harshly to the girl.
"I saw him." She defended.
"He definitely seems more into massacring people then he use to." Faye said.
"He's killing witch hunters. Isn't that what we're trying to do?" Melissa asks.
"They were mauled. Like by an animal." Jake spoke up.
"Since when do animals want crystals?" Mel says. "Guys, Nick is stuck in a nightmare. He's probably lost and scared and disoriented. We need to help him."
"Whatever it is, whatever he is! It's not Nick!" Jake yells at her.
"It is not that black and white, Jake."
"Death? Yeah, it is." He responded.
"It's not Nick." I state. "I know it. It may be his body but it's not him."
"How do you know that?" She asks me.
"If it was really him, he would have immediately came to me. And he didn't. It's not him, Melissa." I say sadly.
Melissa turned and left the abandoned house, not looking back. "She loved him." Adam spoke for his new best friend.
"She needs to move on." Jake said harshly.
"Is that what you'd say to Aria? You know she tried to kill herself at his wake, right?" Adam spoke making me throw my head back in exasperation. "She loved him, too. He was her best friend." Adam says and goes after Melissa.
I sigh and throw my bag over my shoulder, following Jake as he leaves.

"What you said to Melissa was worse than your usual insensitivity to them." I state once we get into Jake's room.
"I don't want her to get hurt. Getting emotional over this'll only make her distracted." He explained.
"You mean Nick, right?" He looks at me pointedly. "This is effecting you more than you realize." My eyes flicker around his face. "You've got that look."
"What look?"
"The look that you're about to invade a small county with nothing but your tortured soul." I state dryly.
"Were you gonna tell me?" He asks, changing the subject.
"Tell you what?" I question in confusion.
"About what happened at the wake?"
"It was nothing. I took a bit too much-"
"It wasn't nothing, Aria!" Jake yells at me. "Almost killing yourself is not nothing." He turns away from me. "You wouldn't be here if-" his voice turns to a whisper before cracking in the middle of his sentence.
