Gray
"Gray!" My mother called from the bottom of the spiral staircase, I turned to glance at my sleeping wife. She was still my wife and for that I'd be eternally grateful, she should gave left me, refused to take me back. I wouldn't have stayed.
"Hush mum, I'm coming!" I called in a whisper jogging down the stairs. My mum and dad had moved into the adjacent house abdny dad had a door installed so they could walk through at any minute, they felt it was best. I needed to regain their confidence that my family was safe and I would never be leaving again.
"I'm taking the boys tonight, take Eve out."
"Mum I think we're okay, she still doesn't want to leave them, she doesn't want to leave the house." We talked in nothing more than a whisper as my boys napped in their bedrooms and Evangeline slept in our bed, her bed. I'd slept on the sofa in the bedroom since she came home eight weeks ago.
"You need to talk to get, explain to her what happened exactly and that it won't be happening again," I nodded, This was something I already knew.
"Okay,"
"Now go get me my grand babies," she smiled, pulling me into her although she was easy a foot shorter she still held the dominance over me.
"You planning to carry all three sleeping babies?" I mocked, my stomach filling with pride as I spoke about them.
"Nope. She'll take one and I'll take the others," my father appeared from the kitchen popping grapes into his mouth. I nodded doing as asked.Evangeline
"You almost ready?" He called peering his head around the bedroom door, watching me clip earrings in. I slowly turned to him and nodded smiling. But anxiety consumed me. I knew the chances of me getting shot again was unlikely but the chance of my boys losing me terrified me to my very core.
"I'll just grab my coat,"
"You won't need it, or these," he knelt in front of me slipping off my heels and placing them back into my closet. I still couldn't remember his face. It was just so unfamiliar and it scared me, the doctors said that my brain had blocked out bad memories but it wasn't entirely true, I remembered giving birth to Gray and Azekial and that was painful to remember.I followed the man who told me he was my husband, down through the patio doors and into the garden. The red picnic blanket laid out on the ground, a basket of food and a bottle of champagne, tea light candles littering the garden. I felt a smile light up my face, this was beautiful.
"I need to tell you some things Evangeline," his voice was shaky and it scared me slightly. I nodded taking a seat on the blanket staring up into the night sky, the stars shining brightly above us. "Please don't hate me,"
"Please tell me," and with that he relayed the whole truth about what had happened over the last 13 months. The horrible, gut wrenching truth. And then it hit me, I remembered. I remembered receiving the texts, his voice as my world went black. I remembered his face.
"I love you Gray," I whispered through silent sobs.
"I love you so much, do you remember anything at all? I need you to remember me, please," he cried too, his face contorting in anguish.
"I remember, I remember you sending me the texts, the last face I saw before I woke up in the hospital, it was yours. But I swear if you ever leave me again, I'll kill you myself." He grinned.
